Default Bond, Blu-ray and HD? Could it be?

This is a copy of a thread I started over at AVSForum
Comments?

First off, this is just pure speculation on my part, but does this make any
sense to anyone else.

1. Lowery Digital is making very, very expensive 4k masters of 9 of the
classic Bond movies. They say it is to go with a new Bond movie late 2005.

Doing all that for a promo for a another Bond movie? Seems a tad
excessive to me.

2. Sony has plans to intro the Blu-Ray systems late 2005.

The only titles will be "new releases" from Columbia Tri/Star.
Sounds like a classic chicken and egg situation to me. Do you buy a
player and wait for movies or wait and see what is released to see if
it is worth buying a player?

3. Sony announces partnership to buy MGM studios, who just happens to
own the old Bond movies and will have freshly minted 4K masters to
add to the collection.

Hum.. wouldn't think Sony would go after MGM just to get the Bond stuff,
but it could be just the icing to frost a Blu-Ray cake...

4. Sony has to kick off the Blu-Ray line with bang and what better way
than to do it with one of the best know movie franchises in all of
moviedom.

They could ship the new Blu-Ray players with the Bond films to kick start
the line. Can you see a new Blu-Ray under the Christmas tree, complete
with a freshly mastered HD Bond collection?

So what do you guys think?..

Welcome to the forum b2b

I think it makes good business sense. They will need some interesting HD titles when launching the Blu-ray format and what movies are more classic than the Bond movies? If they go ahead with the MGM deal, I can't imagine them not putting out the Bond movies

Well personally I could think of better movies to release at the birth of bd-rom. Why release movies that are so old. Why not release some of the most poular current movies that will have the best source material to use. Titles like the matrix and lord of the rings, bourne identiy, Minority report. Stuff of good quality masters already.

If I recall correctly, Columbia Tristar (aka Sony) started making Hi Def masters for their films as a standard practice when making the DVD masters.

So, they should have a huge vault of HD masters to use on their BD-ROM software releases.

It would be nice if some of the big movies you mention came out - but realistically I would only expect Sony movies (like Spiderman) to be released on BD in the ealy days...

Cheers!

They should definatly try and get the matrix trilogy on blu-ray mabe as a box set dvd doesnt do those movies justice in my opinion.
Big Fish would be good

Sony seems to have cut Warner out of the running to buy MGM, so BD-Band may indeed becime a reality!!

Cheers!

I probably will too.
All of them have been mastered in 4K by Lowery, so I expect the MGM/Fox releases of 1-20 to be well worth looking at.

Very old thread! I didn't even know Blu-ray existed in 2004.

I would be in favor of the vintage Connery-era films coming out on blu-ray.

There were Blu-ray recorders around in 2004 (Sony and Panasonic) https://www.blu-ray.com/images/recorders/panasonic.jpg

These were a limited release in Japan and are not quit compatible with the "modern" Blu-ray players as they used caddy's and I'm unsure of the supported codecs and resolution's but I'm confident 1080p was not in the spec as this was a last minute entrant into the current specs.
