Default Lets debate about comedies

I don't want to start a flame war or anything, just to say that before I say my point.

My friend loves comedies, or so he thinks. Everytime I ask him what do you want to watch he says "have you got any new comedies". But on the odd occasion when we watch a comedy I never find it funny at all. I don't hear him laugh either.

The loudest i've ever heard him laugh is the Ewok scene in return of the jedi when I showed him it years ago on VHS. A few days ago we watched the Blu ray of Total Recall and again laughter roared. Then we watch Knocked up, a comedy, it was ok, but it didn't set us alight like the other movies did.

So I hope I have carried my point across. Comedy works better in a non comical movie. When your not expecting it.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is more funny in Total Recall than the last 5 comedies I've watched put together.

So what comedy do you like thats so damn funny? I can count about 3.

See no evil hear no evil
Team America
Spaceballs

And i'll add 40 year old virgin in there as well, and perhaps night of the museum. Mind you, I don't exactly go out of my way to watch these movies.

2. The Big Lebowski
3. Bad Santa

I really couldn't agree with you any less.

I am a big fan of comedies.

Most recently I saw Pineapple Express and laughed almost the whole way through the movie.

Dumb and Dumber
Somthing About Mary
40 Year old Virgin
Spaceballs
Tommy Boy
The Holy Grail
Life of Brian
Blazing Saddles
American Pie
Any Pixar film (a different kind of humor but very subtle yet very funny nonetheless)
Napoleon Dynamite
Anchorman
The Jerk
Trading Places
Coming to America

etc, etc

According to legend Jonathan Swift (the author of Gulliver's Travels) only laughed twice in his life. Once was on reading the first volume of Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy. (I don't know about the second time.)

Not to stir the pot.... but with this rationale, would it be safe to say a horror movie isn't good unless I piss my pants in fear

Speaking of.... this is what funny is ...........

Quote:
Eddie: "Well, don't go putting none of that stuff on my sled Clark. You know that metal plate in my head?"
Clark: "Ah! How could I forget?"
Eddie: "I had to have it replaced, because everytime Cathrine revved up the microwave, I'd Piss my pants and forget who I was for about a half-hour or so. So, over at the VA, they had to replace it with a plastic one. It ain't as strong. So, I don't know if I ought to go sailing down no hill with nothing between the ground and my brain but a piece of government plastic."
Clark: "You really think it matters Eddie?"
Eddie: "Well, see the plate runs right underneath the part here. See, over here, nothing. But, here if this gets dented, then my hair just ain't going to look right."

Monty Python and The Holy Grail
Shaun Of The Dead
Airplane!

MP and The Holy Grail is hands down my favorite comedy. I was in stitches from beginning to end. I do see your point, though. I've seen plenty of action movies that had me bust out laughing. But I think that's also because it's an unexpected moment, so you tend to laugh harder. And I do appreciate Paul Verhoeven's style (Total Recall, Starship Troopers - although these are based on books/short stories which I haven't read so I don't know if the authors deserve the credit). Empire Strikes Back also has plenty of funny moments (mostly because of Harrison Ford). I still to this day quote Empire, like when the wife asks me questions about something, I love to say "There's no time to discuss this in committee."

A lot of recent comedies did nothing for me, either, and I felt the same way about Knocked Up. IMO, I think this is just the generation difference. What I found funny growing up is different from what today's younger generation finds funny.

There are only 3 movies that I can remember to have litterally laughed out loud at:

Spaceballs
Dodgeball
Old School

I've watched other movies that are comedies that I liked and thought were good movies and sometimes funny, just no other movies have gotten me laughing out loud.
