Default Were any of you originally HD-DVD Supporters?

Let's 'fess up, most of us (not all) in the audiophile and pc camps were initially HD-DVD supporters . I became a HD-DVD supporter because of the X-BOX 360 add-on that I could connect to a PC. I became utterly neutral when PC BD drives came in under 250.00. I became a BD fan when software kinks were worked out.

I would really like to thank LG, Lite-On and Pioneer for taking an agressive stand and providing BD at a decent price point for someone that has been taken by formats before. I learned my lessons in the past and didn't want to invest heavily on either format (like I did DCC, Mini Disc, ect.... that's when I had "money to burn" persay). I would also like to thank Arcsoft, Corel, and Cyberlink for quickly solving problems and providing timely updates. Combined with tech savy knowledge and perseverance (almost bought a standalone and thought about a PS3 when PC's were having the software issues - glad I didn't do it) I waved the storm of change and now everything blu-tiful (yeah I know corny pun)!

That gives you my journey - and I regret none of it. I don't even reget owning a HD-DVD because it cost me nothing - and it made me wait for a PC drive that I just enjoy - and my player is 2.0 (even though I have no need for blu-live)!!!! This has turned out to be one of the few success stories that I have had in a format war. I picked the right format with DVD, but I paid $700.00 for a player - I came out severly wounded. This time I paid only $180.00 (and that player is now down to $105.00, but its better than $700.00 to $110.00 for DVD) that's not even a paper cut .

Just call me cautious, and not wanting to be taken by either side again. To show you how much I trusted HD-DVD, I only bought 3 the enitre time (Happy Feet, Superman II, Sky Captian, King Kong came with the X-box drive) - I wasn't going to be sucked in by anyone.

When you answer please, answer how you would classify yourself, an audiophile (if you are please give me a link to your system or tell me what you have), a PC person, a gamer, or a videophile?

never even though about hd-turdvd.

i am a gamer, if that helps clarify my stance on the format war. and i see much more benefits to gaming from blu than i do to movies. if hd dvd won, ps3 would have been in serious trouble and we would have been playing a lot more dvd9 games.

My dad already had a PS3 but found a good deal on buy.com or amazon for the HD-DVD with like 5-8 movies for $300ish back in the winter. I was really shocked he bought it, but he did. Me, nope.

I got my HD DVD player within a day of my first Blu-ray player....

I'm not into games, PC, or video.... I'm not an audiophile, but the audio capabilities were what drove me to Blu-ray and HD DVD (there are improvements over DVD ) and I love film, so I wanted to keep my options open to watch whatever movies I could on the better format, even though I knew one wouldn't last

I was never an HD DVD 'supporter' and really don't consider myself a Blu-ray 'supporter' I buy Blu-ray because it's the best thing available "RIGHT NOW" I just like to get the best possible of whatever it may be..... I was an EARLY DVD adopter... later for blu/hd-dvd but nonetheless, I am basically an early adopter of things when it comes to Film.......

I'm a "Physical-Media Film Collector"

For classification...

I'm a videophile first and a audiophile second.

As for my system.. it's basic.

PS3->HDMI->Denon 788->Paradigm Performace Speakers (Titans around the room, CC-170, PD10 for Sub)

Video is handled my the Sony VPH G70 CRT Front Projector.

It's all in a dedicated HT that I built from scratch myself. You will note the "entry level" nature of many of the gear and also the lack of Record Player or tube amp and then you may concude - Not an audiophile.

But... I listen to CD's and SACD's intently and enjoy them immensely and that qualifies me by my definition of Audiophile.

Nope! Sony supporter here.
PC person. *Portable* PC person.
VGNAR190G - first BD enabled laptop sold in The United States. June 2006 was it's debut here(May 2006 in Japan)
Well, I got one!
That whole "take it with you" aspect, yeah...

Just looking at the specs of HD DVD and Blu-ray, anyone that would choose the lesser one would be... well, dumb!
The natural, logical decision is to choose the one with higher specs and better abilities.

The audiophile camp?!

Wouldn't sufficient space and bandwidth for LPCM or lossless on every release been preferable for audiophiles?

As for the PC camp, why would a format with little to no burner potential (the HD DVD burners never worked properly) be popular in the PC camp? Did you mean the HTPC camp?

All I can say is - remember Beta? But yeah, I consider you one of the HTPC pros around here. Especially concerning Vaio
I wasn't going to get ripped again - so I didn't invest heavily on either format. Going PC really paid off though - I can even forgive Sony for mini disc now !

To be perfectly honest...

I was tempted to go with HD DVD at first. (Hurts to admit that.)

Because,... money for HT is always tight and the first HD DVD players were not only available first but they were $500 compared to the $1000 BD1000 players that were available for Blu Ray.

I was a HTPC user at the time (since 1999) and the fact that the first HD DVD players were just specialized HTPC's for the most part also appealed to me.

But,.. The PS3 changed everything... for the better. They were also somewhat HTPC-esque and they were Blu Ray players for $500 or $600 and came with a free game system.

Yes I ment the HTPC camp As far as audiophiles go, although you have more bandwidth ect. - that doesn't mean everything to an audiophile. Many audiophiles still prefer vinyl over CD. There is a type of emotion that's brought to the music. And intially TrueHD was made a standard in HD-DVD. There are some, if you check the mags, and forums that just prefered HD-DVD initially.

Audiophiles don't really care about space (thats more of a PC or Videophile person) they just want to hear it right. As we see, BD is getting rid of LPCM (which I wished was the standard - that's what audiophiles would have loved - but I figured that when more room was available - they would give it to the eye candy rather than the sound lovers - and that's whats happening - Spiderman 3 will always be a favorite because it has both TrueHD and 5.1 uncompressed on it - thats the way it should be done). Back on topic, many audiophiles look at a myrad of things in their selections - and finality of the spec was one of them. Audiophiles are strange and different - specs matter, but they are not the end all. Most people wouldn't think of having a 5 watt triode amp - but an audiophile would . Check the amps out at Audio Note's site and see if you would ever own one?

I wonder if Sony will eventually repackage the PS/3 in a more HT friendly form factor?

Perhaps as a recorder.

10-4, and the same thing that almost got you - did get me. When I saw that the HD-DVD player was basiclly a P4 in a tiny box - my mind got to thinking. The PS3 didn't initially appeal to me - and I viewed it as a savage way of getting rid of PC's (thank you PC hardware makers for stepping your game up ). I was a HTPC'r at about the same time as you, I was upconverting in 2000, ect... and liked the ideal of having the next generation in a machine I could fix myself. When BD hit >250.00 I jumped in on it too! At that time I didn't care who won because I was covered. This has been a fun experience for me, furstrating at times, but still fun! All the tweeking and new stuff being available. I like it! Never been a set it and forget it person - always wanted to see if something could do just a little bit more .
