Default First Android Powered Phone to Release on T-Mobile This Year

Here we go folks. The New York Times is reporting that T-Mobile will be the first carrier to offer Android. According to "people briefed on the company's plans," the HTC phone will go on sale in the US "before Christmas, perhaps as early as October." The NYT's sources also say that the 5-row QWERTY slider from that Dream video (embedded after the break) matches the HTC device that T-Mobile will sell. The device is still waiting for FCC approval with a three-way Google, T-Mobile, and HTC announcement coming as early as September. The deal is expected to be exclusive making it the only Android phone available in the US this year.
no iphone killer, but it makes me want to lose my tilt. still not sure how i'm feeling the "dock" at the bottom of the phone. couldn't they have made it all screen? and if its using a 300mhz processor like the 2nd video says, i'm passing. htc can't even provide my much faster phone with drivers, why would i want a slower one

Considering it's best provider price and service wise, it should be a formula for success! :/ That's in Minnesota and Arizona, at least (only two places I've been able to compare Verizon, ATT and T-Mobile).

On a side note, I can't imagine why anyone would want to go with ATT for an iPhone. It's cheaper in the end to buy one on ebay for $400-600, unlock it and pay cheaper monthly fees from T-Mobile for comparable service/features (~55-65 vs ~80-90) for 2 years than pay $200 and be locked into a 2 year contract paying out your ass per month.

You also don't have to deal with ATT, which is a bonus.

So it's really no big secret at this point, but we've now received confirmation that T-Mobile will be unveiling its first Android handset -- presumably the Dream, G1, or whatever they decide to call it -- at a press event in New York City on September 23. The event is a whole shindig, too, kicking off in the morning and featuring "presentations from T-Mobile, Google and other company executives" followed by hands-ons with the real deal. Naturally, we'll be on hand in full force, so stay tuned!

i'm not a fan of this phone, but why no android love?

video walkthru

Google just posted a few videos showing all the Google applications loaded on the T-Mobile G1. This includes Seach, Maps, Gmail and Contacts, Calendar, Google Talk and You Tube all enabled with a single sign-on -- no further logins are required. The fact that these are fully synchronized to the web negates the need for a desktop application. Nice. Amazon MP3 store, IMing, Street View compass mode and plenty more highlighted in the videos posted after the break

Looks pretty nifty. Kind of curious on battery life...

Sort of disappointing about the $25-35 data/text plans, even if it's not very surprising (unlimited data, text, pics, etc. is $35) given the precedent set by iPhone/ATT... Although it's still cheaper (not a ton though). The $25 plan would be perfect it if was like 600+ text messages instead of 400. Oh well.

Default Open Handset Alliance scores 14 more members, including sony ericsson

http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/09/o...ers-including/

The Open Handset Alliance just made a major score with 14 more members: AKM Semiconductor Inc., ARM, ASUSTek Computer Inc. (previously rumored), Atheros Communications, Borqs, Ericsson, Garmin International Inc., Huawei Technologies, Omron Software Co. Ltd, Softbank Mobile Corporation, Sony Ericsson, Teleca AB, Toshiba Corporation and Vodafone. That's not quite everyone that matters, but pretty darn close. Were we to climb not-very-far onto the limb of conjecture, we might posit that Garmin might be looking at Andoid for its much-delayed nuviföne, or some sort of followup, while the emergence of an ASUS "Eee Phone" or a XPERIA X1 running Android (Sony Ericsson may very well be the biggest win here, consumer-wise) would be welcome moves from those manufacturers. We'd say at this point the holdouts are starting to stick out more than the actually OHA members, which spells good things for the industry no matter what specific hardware is the fruit of this relationship... but seriously guys, build us some more Android phones.

ok..they've got htc and ericsson. now make us good phones!

Kick ass. I like Sony's handsets a lot, and I'm really starting to like Android. I REALLY want one a virtual keyboard, though.
