Default Need PS3 Help ASAP! (please)

I just got my PS3 in the mail today and it is a thing of beauty!

However after playing some Soul Caliber IV, I popped in the Bluray of Spider Man 1 and the menu came on and everything looked beautiful, and I hit play and went into the other room. Came back and now on the screen it says "unusable signal" but I can hear the audio. It's just a blank screen that says "unusable signal" in the middle.

It's hooked up to a regular standard def TV through the red/white/yellow cords.

What's up with that?

Much thanks to anyone who can help out.

Don't quote me on this, but if I remember correctly blu-rays cannot be played on anything lower than HD 720p. If I am wrong someone correct me, but I think that is what I read when blu-ray first came out

I can confirm it's untrue. I did watch several Blus on my SDTV just to see how vast the difference was.

I'm pretty sure it will downgrade below 720P, but it can't be played using a composite cable (at least not on a PS3). Has to be HDMI or Component.

note: I did all this before seeing your post.

I held down the power button for a few seconds and it beeped. I took out the disc and ended up having to click the power button in the back to turn it all the way off and then back on so I could get back to the settings menu for the PS3 because it kept giving me the "unusable signal" screen.

I got there and looked through the settings figuring maybe there was a setting where the previous owner had it mandatory going through HDMI or something and when it didn't detect the HD it shut down the video.

Couldn't figure anything out there, so I did a restore settings thing, and it basically took me back to what I did when I first got it hooked up. lol (setting the date/time zone/etc).

Okay now I've read all the posts in here and am gonna try this again...

So now I'm back at the menu for Spiderman.....getting ready to hit play.

Real time updates here fellas!

okay...blue PG13 screen....

FBI Anti PIracy screen....this triangle shows up at each one of those

RED WARNING screen in various languages...no triangle...oop there it is again

Columbia logo.....sony pictures

Marvel comic flipping intro

Credit sequence has started, so apparantly this is gonna work.

Mucho thanks..um...o

Got ya! I did say "I might be wrong" in my response, I learned something like the OP did. Thanks for the correction, I only have HD tv's so I never tested it out either way.

DVD vs Blu on a SDTV? Nah, couldn't really tell a difference in PQ. I was comparing Blu on SDTV vs Blu on my Panny Plasma though. And whoah! Huge difference

so Blus will play over composite? Good to know. Sorry for my misinformation. I had found it in another forum and was looking for an official confirmation one way or the other.

The PS3 manual itself is kinda vague on Blu-ray playback unfortunately.

Glad to see you got it working though.

I hooked my PS3 up to a friend's TV once upon a time and produced similar issues. It turned out that the unstable signal was a 24p issue. Everything else unchanged, I turned off the 24Hz output (off mind you, not automatic) in the PS3 menu and that fixed it.

well, considering your source for a sddvd is at 480 resolution, and your source for a blu-ray would be at 720 or higher there should be a significant difference in 'detail' so to speak. it should be 'sharper' at least, on a sd tv set.

Not to mention the Blu-ray of Spiderman 1 will be devoid of the typical extra-jumbo helping of macroblocking and edge enhancement.

the PS3 was setup to 1080P and his tv wasn't capable of 1080p which was why he got the sound and no video. Took me forever to figure this out myself.

it started doing it again.

This time I was watching Resident Evil. It went through the movie, I finished but I didn't do the PS button and quit, I just ejected the disc. Probably shouldn't do that.

But then I put in Madden '08 and it brought up the "unusable signal" but I could hear the audio.

This is really pissing me off.

I might just have to say to hell with it and just wait a month til I get my HD Monitor back from my parent's house.

Nah, just those av plugs. I never had this issue with the PS2 that I used to have hooked up to it.

I figure once I have it connected via HDMI to my monitor, it'll be fine.

Default ps3 problem

more importantly, why is your "thing of beauty" PS3 hooked up to a SDTV. that's just blasphemy.
