Default Ray-Tracing Rome on the Cell...Real-time

The folowing is the Siggraph 2008 Rome Reborn v1.1 demo (in full 1080p) using IBM QS21 Cell blades with iRT ray-tracing software. It's pretty impressive.

Could this be done on PS3?

The Cell used in the video is the exact same Cell processor used in PS3, or is it some different version?

Doesn't he say early on that it is being displayed on a PS3?

The video is being run through the ps3 I believe, but all the hard work is being done in the background by a blade server.

The PS3's RSX is being used to generate the video based on the data crunched by a rack of Cell blade servers. The Cell servers do not have the graphic chip to draw the video.

Yep. I wonder if the movie studios will jump on a Cell-based solution for their rendering farms.

They may as it is gives flexibility for directors and animators to see their shot rendered in real time and fix them within the day. It'll still be a lot of work but it'll be faster to watch.

Yep except that the Zego is on the soft-launch now. The IBM servers are available for purchase now so they got a leg up. The Zego has the Cell and the RSX while the IBM only has the Cell.
