Default Monoprice speaker cable

I'm about to buy some Polk Monitor 60 and was wondering what kind of speaker wires I'm supposed to get from monoprice.com
They will NOT be in wall.
Thanks.

Take your pick of the first 3, depending on how many feet you need!

You could go with a higher gauge, but you might lose some signal strength - 12 or 14 hooked up with some banana plugs is the way to go.

I went with 300ft 14 GA and the Banana Plugs. Very, very happy with it.

I went from 24 to 14 and there was an astronomical difference. If anything, I would say go to 12 from 16.

This is pretty helpful. I am sure there are better resources on the net.

Stick with 14 or 16 AWG and you should be good.

Monoprice's products are usually great quality but I've had some problems with their 12 gauge speakerwire. It started rotting on me after a period of a few months. I use BlueJeans cable for speakerwire now since it seems a little higher in quality:

I hate it when people say "rot" when describing electronics or BD's. Speaker cable and BD's cannot "rot", they are made of copper. It is hard to say exactly what happened to your cables, usually the only thing that can happen is oxidation of the copper wire. Even then, the signal degredation is miniscule and usually inaudible on the average system. If you had audiophile gear then maybe....

In any case, the cables did not "rot". It sounds like you had some sort of rare problem in order for the cables to cause signal degredation after a few months.

You can buy 12 gauge and 14 gauge speaker wires in the auto department (not the electronic & TV department) of Wal-Mart at reasonable prices.

This is the general rule: The longer the wire, the lower the wire gauge. See A Guide to Optical, Coaxial, and Speaker Cables. Use the table in the guide as a reference.

I would say that falls under the second definition.

You know they have lifetime warantees, right?

Yes, I was aware of that. Don't get me wrong, I've bought lots of stuff from Monoprice and typically their products are of good quality. But this spool of speaker wire from them went bad on me and I wanted to share my experience. I can't recommend their speakerwire after my personal experience.

It could've just been a bad batch. You could also report it so they can have the wires checked.
