Default Speakers out of phase?

I was fiddling around with my speakers, Insignia NS-B2111. If you’re unfamiliar with them, they are a knock-off of the KEF design, with the tweeter in the center of the woofer cone (see picture below). While I had one of the enclosures open to see what other “stuffing” I could put in them, I noticed something odd – the tweeter was hooked up out of phase with the woofer.

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but I always thought the idea of wiring a tweeter out of phase with the woofer was to help time-align the two drivers in a conventional two way system, with the tweeter mounted above (or below) the woofer. Since the whole idea of a coincidental tweeter is to keep the time aligned, shouldn’t the tweeter be wired in phase with the woofer?

Usually, I'd be inclined to agree with you. Are both speakers wired the same way? If so, it could be that the crossover induces some phase delay, which wiring the tweeter out of phase "corrects".

Might be worth checking with the manufacturer...

I'm sure It's wired that way because the speakers are coaxial and to avoid phase cancellation. Both drivers have capability to produce similar frequencies so they are wired out of phase.

I have seen other coaxial speakers that way.

That’s just it though, it’s coincidental, not coaxial ala KEF Uni-Q speakers. I have 4 of the speakers, and they’re all wired the same.

I am not familiar with their technology but maybe it's their own version of coaxial. In any case I'm sure it's to avoid phase cancellation.

If it really has peaked your interest I would call the manufacturer and ask to speak to a tech. Sorry couldn't be of more help..............
