Default Help with sub on my Onkyo 606

I just bought a new onkyo 606 and on the back of the receiver I see the input for the sub is a single coaxial. My sub does not have a coaxial wire just your normal +/-. So my question is what adapters do I need and the best place to pick it up.

Does your sub plug into the wall for power? If it doesn't then you can't use a pasive sub with your receiver. I think you could get a power amp for it but you might aswell just buy a powered sub. If it is powered you can get an rca cable to speaker wire from your local radioshack.

What kind of sub do you have?

What Krypton said is more or less correct. I'd add (as a recent Onkyo 605 convert) that you don't want to use that old sub. I'd imagine it's passive and it's not going to sound nearly as good as a sub that's powered.

There are lots of options if you want to look into a new sub. If you decide to do that, feel free to ask- there are a lot of very knowledgable speaker folks around here. Just make sure to have a budget in mind.

You could buy an amp to drive your sub. You would connect the RCA LFE out from your receiver to the RCA input of the mono amp (or XLR input), then connect the amp to the sub via speaker wires.

But that will probably cost you more that buying a sub with an integrated amp... And probably the quality of your passive subwoofer is probably not worth that investment... But it's just my guess!

You can do what they said, definately get a powered sub or yoiu can also just run your front channels thru the sub and set the crossover. Some brands have done that mostly in the past or to keep the system price total down. If you do decide to buy a powered sub, I am a retailer for over 70 brands including several Subwoofer brands.

Just spend a few hundred dollars on a normal powered sub and spare yourself all the work you would have to do with your old sub. There are really good subs out there for below $300

You can buy great amplifiers for your subwoofer from Parts-Express. These amplifiers are much better than the low quality amplifiers that are inside the powered subwoofers. My two top-of-the-line 6 ohm Hsu subwoofers are passive. I drive them with a Cinepro (600 watts into 6 ohms per channel) amplifier.

You need to bridge (combine the two channels) the amplifier since you only need one channel. Connect a cable from the back of your receiver to the amplifier and run speaker wires (12 or 14 gauge) from the amplifier to your subwoofer. If you have a good subwoofer, it will sound better than most low-priced powered subwoofers.

That's not so bad! I though it would be more expensive...

Default Thanks for your help.

Thanks for all your help. I eventually wanted to upgrade my speakers anyways i guess that time has come sooner than i wanted. I dont have a bunch of cash right now but i dont want the reciever to just sit there either. Could you please let me know if these subs will work for now.
