Default What true RPGs do you recommend for the PS3?

Besides Final Fantasy
and not including untrue RPGs like action RPGs etc.

I mean RPGs that are either out already or will come out within the next two years.

Valkyria Chronicles, Folklore, and Enchanted Arms(depends on your taste but i enjoyed it). and Japan has some good ones out already called Record of Agarest War, Tears to Tiara, and Cross Edge. for a strategy style rpg i recommend Disgaea 3.

I was thinking of getting Oblivion, but it didn't get good reviews for it. I'm very much into RPGs and I noticed that its pretty much the only one out for the PS3.

Can you please tell me more about it? Whats so good? Whats so bad?

Thank you!

Where are you getting your reviews?

I've seen nothing but good reviews for this game.

Unfortunately I don't have this game either, at this point I'd figure I'd just wait for Fallout.

Yeah, I'm looking at various places and I'm only seeing good reviews as well. I'm not too sure where I read that one bad review as it looks to be the only bad one.

Looks like I had really bad luck?

Anyway, my questions still stand with why people like this game so much or dislike it.

I second Enchanted Arms, and definitely get Oblivion, and *most* people that like RPGs love Disgaea. Oblivion's good points: Long game, can do almost anything you want (massacre a village, if you feel evil enough), excellent graphics (sunsets worthy of taking a date on, if you're nerdy enough), original (game of the year) version is now $30. Oblivion's bad points: It's LONG (if you want to do EVERYTHING, expect to sink 250 hours into it), the main story is pretty lame (though the sidequest stories more than make up for it), and I felt the gameplay early on was rather unbalanced, getting owned by anything and everything, then once you get stronger, nothing can really stop you, even the evil guy you have to fight at the end of the Knights of the Nine quest (name escapes me now, been a while.) Fallout has been mentioned, because it's made by the same people that made Oblivion (Bethesda). One other MAJOR note, is that I think you mentioned that you want non-action RPGs. Oblivion IS NOT TURN-BASED/Japanese style. You make your character physically slash his sword/evade/raise shield, etc. But believe me on this: I LOVE turn-based RPGs more than anything, and one of the things that kept me from getting Oblivion was the action aspect. I still absolutely LOVED Oblivion. It's just that good.

I don't even like most RPGs, and Oblivion is one of the best games I've ever played. The size of the game, everything you can do, etc. is unreal. You can become a vampire, fight in the arena (like Gladiator) to make money, be a hitman, and many more quests/missions. There's a large variety of monsters/enemies, and the overall landscape is huge, containing several cities within it. I've put in about 150 hours and I still have a lot to do. This game is one of the few that is worth full price, but now I believe it can be had for $30. It's a steal at that price.

As far as "already out", the choice is, unfortunately, slim (unless you have PS2 backward compatibility of course, 60Gb and old 80G model only).

As for PS3, Oblivion is your best bet for now.

This week (today actually), Disgaea 3 is released on the PS3.

Coming by the end of the year, we should have Valkyria (a tactical Wargame / RPG), and most of all Eternal Sonata.

2009 should be the year of RPG (hopefully) for the PS3, with the massive White Knight Story coming in Q1 I think, and of course FF XIII et FF versus XIII (tactical rpg) coming by the end of 2009.
The status of timed exlusives for the 360 is unknown as of now (Last Remnant...) but probably for 2009. There is a rumor that a "Tales Of ..." is in development for PS3, but it is only a rumor for now.

So is it worth getting the 'Game of the Year' edition of Oblivion for $60? Or should I get the $30 regular edition? I don't know how much the expansion packs are individually.

I'm currently playing Oblivion game of the year edition.
And from the "RPG" point of view it's fantastic and massive no question there.
But personally what I don't like is the fact that it is maybe 10 or 12 Frames per second which does not make it as fluid as the PS3 is capable of. When you pan around you can see the jerky motion and when compared to the fluidity of race games it does not do it. Sonic Games on the WII are way WAY more fluid. Fluidity is one of the reasons why I wanted the powerful PS3 so that's a disappointment for me.

Other than that I must insist it's a great game

As for those who talk about Disgaea 3 I just checked a video of it and it seems to be done in Isometric 3D aka "fake 3D" which would be great if we were in 1990 ...

I love Oblivion. It gives you so many options on how you want to play the game. You can be different races, sexes, classes, born under different astrological signs and have a different specialty everytime you play. Infinitely replayable. There are so many sidequests that to play the whole thing takes 100's of hours.

I also played Enchanted Arms, which is a strategy/puzzle RPG where the action is grid based. The problem most people have with this game is one of the characters at the beginning, some just can't get past it.

The GOTY edition has a few extra quests and areas not on the regular version. I personally think it's worth the whole $60, but I can why some would want to save $30. Either way, you will be happy with your purchase.

It really depends on what types of RPGs you like. Some only like JRPGs, others only like WRPGs, and a lot of RPGs fans like both.

When you say action RPGS, I think you're talking about games like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.

JRPG- Enchanted Arms (nothing special but a decent JRPG)
WRPG- Oblivion

Some like Folklore, but I really didn't care for the demo.

Upcoming RPGs
Valkyria Chronicles looks promising.
Fallout 3 looks pretty good, it's being made by Bethesda Softworks which created Oblivion.
