Default need new sound (audio-newbie, PC user)

My speakers are dead (and dead rubbish anyway), I have my PC set up in my bedroom with a Blu-ray drive and a 24 inch 1920x1200 DVI/HDCP wallmounted monitor and I've been watching Blu-rays for a year or so now with a £10 pair or stereo speakers I got for free but they've started going fuzzy, well the left one, I think it's because I broke the cable and had to reattach it.

I think my motherboard supports 7.1:
The onboard 8-channel HD audio (High Definition Audio, previously codenamed Azalia) CODEC enables high-quality 192KHz/24-bit audio output, jack-sensing feature, retasking functions and multi-streaming technology that simultaneously sends different audio streams to different destinations. You can now talk to your partners on the headphone while playing a multi-channel network games. All of these are done on one computer.
It has those little analog ports i think there's 4 for the surround sound and another 2 for mic and line in, there's also some sort of digital output. Here's the back connections on my motherboard.

I don't know anything about audio so I was hoping someone could advise me as to how I can get better sound than with my old £10 stereo speakers, just because they're cting up and I have to get a new pair so I may aswell get something better, plus I'm moving house next thursday so I guess that's as good a time as any to set up new speakers, though it will just be in my bedroom so I don't think I'll be going for so sort of monster system like you would put in a living room / home theater.

If someone could let me know what sort of money I'd expect to pay and where I could order form (UK), and any general advise. Remember I'm clueless about audio and I haven't decided on a budget yet but it won't be bleeding edge.

Thanks.
