It's from 1998. I really like it but it's very strange. From wiki:

Quote:
Dark City is a 1998 science fiction film noir written by Alex Proyas, Lem Dobbs and David S. Goyer, and directed by Proyas. It stars Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland, and Jennifer Connelly. While it was not a major box office hit when originally released, it has subsequently developed a considerable cult following within film industry and cinéaste circles. Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert is a particularly high-profile supporter of Dark City, labelling it the best film of 1998.[1]

The story concerns a man waking in a hotel room with no memory, which soon proves to be but one of many troubles. He is sought by police, who believe him to be a serial killer, and also by a group of mysterious men with psychokinetic powers. Furthermore, something appears to be wrong with the world at large: time, memory, and identity behave in unusual ways.

It's one of my top scifi movies of all time. Go into it expecting a good story, it's not as action heavy as some movies - which most people are getting used to now.

5/5 in my book, great blu-ray

It's only the best sci-fi movie ever made besides Blade Runner, imo.

The Matrix totally ripped it off. They even reused some of the sets.

imdb.com is your friend.

having recently watched the blu-ray disc, dark city is not as good as i remembered it being. i would call it a flawed, but interesting sci-fi drama.

completely agree - watch Dark City and then watch the Matrix and look at the similarities. And Dark City came out first!

Absolutely. It galls me when some magazine proclaims THE MATRIX as revolutionary sci-fi, when it's obvious that they've either never seen DARK CITY, or don't realize that DARK CITY covered the same territory first and in a more evocative way.

But I think DARK CITY will have the last laugh. In the ten years since it first came out, its reputation and respect has only grown bigger and bigger while THE MATRIX has two sequels that tarnished it's reputation, endlessly crappy knock-offs and is starting to become a late 90's relic.

But isn't The Matrix praised and considered revolutionary for its special effects/art direction? The Matrix and Dark City share similarities but they're pretty broad. I mean, might as well throw Terminator in there. I think Dark City is okay. I give it points for cinematography and its noir elements, but other sci-fi films with a similar tone that I think are better are Twelve Monkeys, Blade Runner, Brazil, Children of Men, THX 1138.

was gonna say, there's really no such thing as original anymore, so i don't see the problem here.

tho i've never heard of the movie, but i'll check it out now.

Umm...I love good movies, but Dark City is seriously not as good as all the hype (including that of Roger Ebert) suggests. While it contains an intriguing theme, a creepy atmosphere and good acting (I especially liked Keifer Sutherland as the Doctor) it is in no way as epic in scope or philosophy as Blade Runner or The Matrix. While The Matrix definitely takes themes from Dark City, it ran with them succeeding far beyond what Dark City could achieve (at least at first until the Wachowskis ran it into the the ground).

Dark City IS a good movie. I wasn't going to buy it at $20 but couldn't resist it at $15 and I highly recommend it now at $10.99. Just don't expect it to blow everything else out of the water, because it doesn't.

It did not live up to the hype for me. I would say it is a good rental, but i would never buy it.

Interesting concept, ok execution. Not so mind blowing....

Jennifer Connelly... yummy.

If you're a big sci-fi nerd like me, Dark City is a must buy. If you're not that into sci-fi, rent it first. Don't bother watching the theatrical cut either, as it gives entirely too much away. The director's cut is far superior. As for the matrix ripping it off, I doubt it. The two did share quite a few thematic elements as well as a similar color pallet and overall feel. But the matrix holds up as its own thing. Despite the backlash against it mostly due to the sequels (both of which I liked), I think Matrix is a better movie.

Alright let me just say this. Dark City was a blind buy for me and it was worth it. I was inrigued and amazed by the story as it was a moving piece of art to me.

The original Matrix was a masterpiece to me and was groundbreaking in its visual direction. Why must everyone hate on the sequels? Reloaded was amazing in my opinion just slightly below the first. It was every bit as philosophical as the first one, just more action. As far as Revolutions goes I thought it was good, but simply not a disaster. Everyone acts like the 2nd and 3rd were just horrible they were above decent and neccessary to close out the first.

As far as Blade runner goes. I thought it was so boring the first time I watched it 4 years ago, but picked it up on Blu when it came out and I've lately gotten really into it and yes it is in fact one of the best if not the best sci-fi movie.

I would certainly put Dark City in line with the Matrix, Star Wars, and Blade Runner as remarkable if not the best of the best.

As has already been pointed out by others in this thread, Dark City offered something that many of the other cited Sci-Fi films don't have: originality. As Ebert said in his review and commentary, this film offered images that had never been seen before. And it had a story line that continued developing until the end of the film.

I wouldn't place it above a film as revolutionary as Blade Runner, but considering a lot of the other swill being passed off as sci-fi, it's certainly near the top of its class. It's perhaps unfortunate that Hollywood's penchant for producing over-saturated action films has created an ADD audience who can't fully enjoy films like this. But long after lesser films have been relegated to the eye-candy dust bin, this film will stand on its own.

Well if it is lame and boring as Blade Runner is I will pass. I blind bought Blade Runner in hopes it was as good as people say and was extremely disapointed. I would like to see Dark City eventually but I dont like hearing those comparisons.

I just wanted to add that I saw DC in Sam's Club today for $13.24. Sure after tax it comes out to a little more than the Tower.com sale ($10.99 + shipping), but I thought that was a good store price. I wish I hadn't placed my order yesterday from Tower or I'd have picked it up and watch it today. I guess I could have gotten it anyway and just returned the Tower one when it arrived, but I hate returning stuff.
