Default CNET: PS3 Blu-ray Settings

Here's a link from CNET that gives their opinion on blu-ray settings for the PS3. Gotta love this quote from them "...it's no secret that the PlayStation 3 is the best Blu-ray player-- it's the reference Blu-ray player we use here at CNET, and we're not the only ones."

Is it me, or do I disagree with half of the settings they chose.

Upscale: Normal - Why Not Full?

' Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr is best for video' - I find that Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr is too light, not enough contrast.

RGB Full Range (HDMI): Limited - Again, why not Full?

RGB Full range is known to cause banding on HDTVs (particularly LCDs) that don't support that sort of color encoding (many, many HDTVs do not).

It's immaterial if you're using Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr though, at least in the context of Blu-ray playback.

Interesting on the RGB showing banding.
I don't think i've noticed banding when I have it on that setting, but i'll go home and def. run some colour tests through my computer and through my PS3.

My TV looks awful with RGB set to limited. Full looks excellent!

Not just you. When I saw this on Cnet, I took the settings they were providing as general consumer settings. I would much rather go with the settings information provided on forums such as Blu-Ray's or AVS's.

Why would you use Full upscaling? That stretches the image to fit the screen. It wreaks havok on older movies or TV shows.

The other settings are honestly dependent on what your set can support, but RGB typically isn't as good. There's a big forum thread on AVS about the PS3 that explains it.

For the majority of displays the CNET settings are correct. It really depends on your display and what colorspace it expects from your player.

"Upscale: Normal", keeps the aspect ratio. Setting it to full will stretch the image and change the aspect ratio.

"Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr" will probably be best as long as you calibrate the TV to that setting.

"RGB Limited" sets the signal to the "Video Level Signal". "RGB Full" stretches the signal to the "PC Level Signal".

Mostly all TVs support the Video Level signal. PC Level signal is used for PC Monitors. Video Level signal on a TV will look the same as PC Level signal on a Monitor. PC Level signal on most TVs will crush the blacks and whites, which might give the illusion of a better picture, but in reality, the picture is worse.
