Default Playstation 3 HDD emergency! Help needed

I need help for my Playstation 3. I go and turn my ps3 on today and I get an error saying "File system corrupted, system will be restored" so I press 'ok'. the system goes through restore, then resets. When it is back up the error comes back up again saying system will be restored again.

did you recently update?

...as a last resort, I would disconnect the hard disk drive and re-connect it.

your hard drive may have gone bad.

...as I said, once you have tried other fixes then disconnect the drive and reconnect.

If you still get the error, you may just have a bad HDD. Then call Sony. (or swap out HDD with most any 2.5" SATA HDD.)

By the way where in the PS3 is the OS stored ? I mean if it's in the HDD, changing the HDD won't result in a "blank" OS ?

Well, I ended up going to CompUSA and getting a 60 dollar 120 gig hard drive to replace it, and it's working again.

I would go ahead and get a hold of Sony support about the bad HDD. They will most likely replace it for free.

Yeah, they would charge you for the replacement since it's out of warranty (the playstation3 comes with a one year warranty from Sony). Anyway, they'll most likely give you a refurbished hard drive. So you did the right thing by going out and buying a brand new hard drive (also, it works for you since now you have a reason to buy a bigger hard drive which is what you seemed to have done.

The same thing happened to mine a few days ago!!!

I formatted my HDD with Windows and now it works.

If that doesn't work for you, then just buy a new HDD. It costs $150 to have it repaired by Sony. And a 500GB notebook HDD is only like $130.

I used an external 2.5 inch drive case and used FAT32.

Try using the PS3 without the HDD in it. Any error messages?

PS3 and Windows? Windows runs on Intel chips and AMD, but the cell processor is different. I don't see how you can do that. There is a version of Yellow Dog Linux that will work on the PS3.

I removed the PS3's HDD, put it in an external drive case, hooked it up to my Vista laptop, and formatted it.

I was hoping to get windows on the PS3. But I imagine the OS kirnel would have to be re-written, especially the HAL, and that will never happen as Windows is not open source like Unix. When I get around to it, I will partition the drive and will put Yellow Dog Linux on it. I will have a non gamer's OS, but still not have the apps I really want.
