Default New Sony BD player, BDP-S300

Sony announce new BD player, the BDP-S300.

It will have all the same capabilities as the BDP-S1, but it will have an MSRP of just $599.

Well that's good news on the price front.
I wish it played CDs though, that's just weak.
Oh, and, no word on HDMI 1.3 in this unit or not?

It does, apparently.

I would expect that this is Sony's low end player to take them through Holiday 07, and we will see a more expensive player with all the bells and whistles.

This probably the "Sapphire 2" player they showed at CES. $599 MSRP is a great price point. Competes directly with the Toshiba HD-A20. If it has decoding of next-gen audio codecs, I might give it a look.

This x-mas is going to be dominating for BD. From the amount of excellent and well priced players, to the PS3 in full swing, to the Summer Blockbusters all on Blu-Ray. HD-DVD needs to have a pitty party starting now.

This new player might use low cost BD-ROM drive utilized in PS3 instead of Pioneer's BD burner drive used in BDP-S1.

How long before the first HD-DVD troll says that $599 is still too expensive?

I'd still just get a PS3 for the same price.

I have a PS3, will keep it for the upstairs tv. But instead of buying a new high priced hdmi receiver, I will buy something like this and use the analog outs.

Now all we need is Universal to jump on board and game over.

I wonder if Sony will make a Blu-ray player addon for Xbox 360.

A bunch of people couldn't get their heads around the PS/3. Now they don't have to.

I'm guessing this makes a reduction to $399 SRP for the A2 a certainty. And the HD DVD fanbois will be all over how the A20 is a better machine for $599 (and it might be). But, content is king. And the price argument is dead and dying, and now they have to play the spec game, which is where they've always said people should NOT play.

Gary

LOL. I know. I was just quoting the movie as I find it one of many that I find funny to quote. I wasn't asking the question in the quote, but the character was.

Anyhow, great news on the Blu-ray front.
