Default Blu-ray disk - cost and manufacturing issues

The Blu-Ray consortium has nnounced that costs per disc would be similar to DVD (March 29, 2004 press release).

Even if the cost of the raw materials is the same, isn't it likely that the cost to the user of blank Blu-Ray disks will remain stubbornly higher than with DVD, either because Blu-Ray will require a lot of proprietary new machinery to be manufactured, or simply because the number of manufacturers able to produce it will be much lower than in the relatively competitive DVD market???

Any comment or reference doc most welcome ...
