Default New King of the Blu-ray Hill

Home Theater Magazine has just named the Panasonic DMP-BD50 as the best source component . Runner up is the Samsung BD-P1500. Honorable mention (Miss Congeniality) the Sony PS3. The maturation of Blu-ray is well on its way

Not what I was expecting based on the thread title!

But Panasonic sure does make a good player

Hmmmmm. How do we reconcile this with Kris Deering's comments in the Sept issue of HTM?

Quote:
“Blu-ray playback looked excellent and in line with the best players I’ve seen. The notable exception to this is the Denon DVD-3800BDCI, which looked a tad crisper than the Panasonic."

“Unfortunately, the DMP-BD50 falls short in standard DVD playback.”

What criteria are they using for "best" in the article?

It's their Rave awards Best Gear of the Year. I guess they gave it to the Panny for price and performance I also think they are no longer considering DVD performance (they have stopped reviewing DVD's and have a very pointed comment to one reader in the letters section). I have the issue you're talking about too .

This was a pretty good issue (OCT) off topic - they also reviewed the Marantz 8003 Pre-pro, and several other pieces of gear. Simaudio has also come out with a new prepro that does TrueHD and DTS-HD-MSTR...it's over my head though - $18,000.

That would make sense. As many of us have said, "best" is a flexible term when confronted with multiple features/cost points.

I think it was Kris who posted that the staff was getting reader criticism for focussing increasingly on Blu-ray and decreasingly on SD DVD. Can't say I'm sorry to hear it, though.

I'll pick up a copy this evening.

Nice,

I'm beginning to believe that if my PS3 ever stops working,... something even better may be available.

Awesome!

In all honesty...is good to see a standalone at the top of the Blu hill.
