Default optical cables and soft/hard subtitles ??``

I am trying to get due to a lack of cables and a lot of games to buy, a quick solution for my 360 audio. I have RCA going to my TV via the 360 component cable, if I were to output the sound to my amp, via digital optical output (the optical being on the TV, and being run to a optical in on the amp). I should get 2.1 sound from the optical, its the only option I have with the cables I have got at the moment, until I buy the Elite and use HDMI/ and an optical cable (I can get 5.1 from the 360). So basically any one know if that would work? ?

My second thing is my 360 doesn't want to display I think the term is soft subtitles, for example on the Bourne ultimatum , every time it goes to new locations it makes a noise, and sorta does a typewriter subtitle effect saying "Waterloo station, south entrance, " or "CIA HQ, Virginia" whatever, any way to get them displaying or is just a limitation of the player?

All help is appreciated.

For most televisions, the optical out is not meant to be a passthrough for rca audio in from other inputs. It is meant for antenna dolby digital for digital sources. Technically it wouldn't even be 2.1 because rca left right audio is only 2 channel discrete. Your best bet is to just wait and then put money into your receiver and you can just used hdmi for both audio and video. I don't know what you mean when you talk about subtitiles. Is it just for that movie? Isn't that part of the disc and not have anything to do with the 360?
Hope this helps.

My bad I just meant 2 channel L + R Audio. As the Premium 360 don't have optical its techincally passing 5.1, put its not real 5.1, it becomes as you say 2 channel discrete. I don't quite know what the antenna thing you talk about- put I assume you mean it can pass the audio anyway ?? I'll see later on when i return home and try it with a optical cable.

cheers

Maybe I'm confused here, but why not just optical out from the 360 right to your receiver? That'll get you the best sound.

Though normally HDMI supports both audio and Video, in the case of the xbox 360, that is not the case. I have an elite and plenty of HDMI spots, with just this cable hooked up, the audio comes thru sporatically. It actually says in the documentation to use an optical cable for the 5.1 sound. I spent many hours on the phone with Sony, the maker of my receiver, as well as Microsoft tech support trying to figure out why the audio wasn't working properly from the HDMI cable. I even returned/exchanged the elite as I thought something must be wrong. The gist, if you wish to reset your audio every time you turn on the xbox by going into the audio section, it will work but, if you want it to work everytime, you have to use optical. As, I do not use it for playing movies etc, this was more than fine.

Hey Jonny I hate to break this too u man but u can't have an optical and hdmi connection on the 360 at the sametime .

Trust me I already tried it. For those who have a 360 u probably already know that the optical input is implemented on the a/v cable not the console itself, and when the hdmi is connected into the 360 the a/v cable wont fit because the a/v input is so freaking close to the hdmi input.

I know its hard to make since of this post because something like this is hard to explain on a computer, but if someone has a 360 try connecting an optical and hdmi and you'll see what i mean.

This is not true. There is an adapter. The HDMI slides underneath the adapter and you plug the optical into the adapter that slides into the larger slot. I believe the 360 comes with this piece. At least the elite did.

Really, oh..well I guess mines is set up a little differently then, I got the 20gb model that came with the intregated hdmi input (they realeased that model a few months after the elite).

The elite might be set up a little differently. It sucked for me because i couldn't get Dolby Digital on my 360 games until I got a next-gen receiver.

That's possible. Out of sheer boredom of nothing to do at work, I went and looked at the various manuals on the xbox site. The elite does come with the HDMI Audio piece you need but the others don't. Based on the info for even the pro systems, they don't come with the HDMI cable, so you'd order the set together and it should work the same way. The adapter has both the red/white audio ports and the optical port.
