Is it just me, or was the Made of Honor review a little harsh? Normally it's been my experience on this forum that Wondermaker is pretty balanced, but it sounds like she was having a crappy day when that review was written.
The movie isn't half-bad. Maybe 2-3 stars at most. But it amazes me that a movie like Madagascar, which was dread-awful, got 4.5 stars (really???), and Made of Honor only 1/2 star. (For the record, I have 3 kids and LOVE animated films. They account for a large % of our DVD/BD collection.) I mean, let's recap some recent reviews: Daredevil gets 1.5 stars? Starship Troopers, 2.5 stars? Speed Racer, 4 stars??? End of Days, 3 stars? All of these seem exceptionally generous considering how crap all those films are, even for their genre's. Sure, you can't compare movies like MoH to cinematic masterpieces like the Godfather or Saving Private Ryan. It's all subjective to the genre. MoH is a chick flick/romantic comedy, and compared to others of its ilk (You've Got Mail, 27 Dresses, Maid in Manhattan, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones, etc.) it wasn't half bad. The acting was solid and it did a great job with comedy and keeping the plot moving along. These aren't my favorite types of movie, yet even I enjoyed it. I dunno... maybe the admins should allow more than 1 review of a movie, or at least pair reviewers with movie genres they enjoy. Or possibly set a scale of film basics by which a movie is critiqued. No offense to Wondermaker, but the review reads like the musings of someone who just dumped after a long relationship (or, possibly, hates Patrick Dempsey with the fury of 1000 suns), and has an axe to grind. Nothing about it says "objective". (And again, for the record, I spent 10 years as a professional movie, music and video game critic for both print and online magazines, so I speak from experience here.) Of course, this is all my opinion, so hold all flames. This is just constructive criticism here for a site that I (usually) hold in high regard. Any thoughts? |
