Default Onkyo 605 help

I'm at a loss right now. I have no audio coming through my set-up, when watching cable tv. I don't know what happened but the only way I can get audio on the CBL/SAT channel is by having the HDMI passthrough. No issues at all when playing BD or games, surround sound glory there, only when trying to watch cable.

Any suggestions?

How are you sending the audio from your HDTV/cable box to your receiver?

It could be a problem with the software in the cable box...in my cable market here (which is Comcast) their boxes that are older than the last six months do not usually work with the HDMI connection. Sometimes they pass the video, like youre saying, but since their HDMI software is not configured for repeating devices like a receiver, it just shuts down and doesnt work at all.

see, it worked fine for about a week, everything proceeding the way it would be expected. Then from Friday to Saturday, the audio blinked out the way I described. Now, as of this morning, the receiver won't stay powered on. Power on, 5 sec, receiver shuts off

Obviously that's not good. How long have you had the 605? Still under warranty, I assume (unless you bought a refurb)?

First, I would disconnect everything from the 605 and then see if it continues to power-off on it's own. If it works fine, then something in your connections is causing the problem (can't imagine what that would be, possibly speaker wire touching multiple terminals ). Start connecting things one at a time to find the problem. If it still shuts off on it's own with everthing disconnected, it's time to contact Onkyo for service.

Good luck, and let us know how things turn out.

Receiver delivered 9/11, connected 9/20. One week in operation. 1 yr manufacturer's warranty.

Yeah, it's either doing that because of heat (5 seconds? unlikely) or an electrical problem of some sort. I agree with the above post- try it out by itself and if it still does it get it fixed.

i would call onkyo. there's a short somewhere in the system and it's going into protect mode where the standby light blinks.

unplug everything and turn in on volume all the way up and see if it stays on. then start plugging things in one at a time.

Uhm, try components one by one and see if it turns off.

How hard are you pushing it when it shuts down- what's the volume at?

yeah you need to isolate the problem. it might even be one of your speakers or your speaker wires maybe. make sure when testing each component that you turn the volume up past 50.

That may be good. Now, without speakers connected, plug-in each of your devices one at a time and turn the 605 on. If everything works like that, then unplug them all and reconnect your speakers and turn on the 605 without any inputs connected. If that still works, then repeat connecting each device and see what that does. What are you using to connect your speakers? If bare wire, you may have had a stray wire touching another terminal. Keep us apprised.

Edit: When you connect your speakers, if they cause the 605 to shut off, then connect them one at a time to isolate the potential culprit.

not pushing it at all, I turned it on, it was at the same volume level when I shut it off last night: 38. 5 sec, bam, shut off.

OK, connected the PS3 into HDMI2 first, it shut down. Disconnected, tried the cable feed into HDMI1, stayed on. Disconnected, tried PS3 into HDMI2 again, remained on this time.

ok, I believe the receiver shutting down problem was caused by the HDMI connections not being completely secure, due to bent cables. I was completely unaware, removed a panel, everything is fine, power-wise.

Now, I'm back to the original reason for the thread, the only way i get audio through CBL/SAT is HDMI passthrough. I had to go into the set-up screen and turn on HDMI output, where I didn't have to do that before and everything worked fine. What the hell could have caused this change?

I have the 605 hooked up to a Verizon Fios Cable Box (HDMI) and Sony BP-S300 Blu Ray player (HDMI) output via HDMI to my TV. The 605 requires that you assign the HDMI inputs for slots 1 & 2. It sounds like from your last post you did not do this originally.

No, I did that, Time Warner Cable box is HDMI 1, PS3 is 2.

The PS3/BD works fine, I go into the set-up screen, turn the HDMI output off, and everything works as it should.

I only started messing with the HDMI output on/off when I initially discovered that I was getting no audio from cable box on Saturday morning. That was the only thing that allowed the audio from the cable box to come out the speakers. Before that, everything was fine for a week. I'm trying to understand what could have possibly caused this.

Also, thank you to everyone who has provided assistance.
