Default Need Your Advice

ok so im going to buy my tv tomorrow and i narrowed it down to these 2

The samsung HL-S5687W

The Mitsubishi WD-57731

Now i need your advice to pick the best one. wich has better PQ on standard tv and HD tv

i have a 3 year old mitsubishi thats 1080i and i think the HD PQ is pretty good
but the standard PQ isnt that good especially when watching regular dvd's.
i have never had a problem with the tv so i know its durable so i would figure the WD-57731 is too.

So what should i pick???

Well if your hoping that increasing your resolution to 1080p is going to help SD and DVDs I really doubt it. Unless it has a built in Up-Rezer and even then you can't make pixels from nothing.

However you will be able to enjoy your BD movies in Full 1080p.

I bought the little brother of the Samsung, the 5087 and I love it. I think this recent line of Sammy DLPs are the best looking RPTVs other than the Sony XBR line.

I used to sell the Mitsu 57" and just don't think the PQ is as clean as the Sammy, and neither did most of my customers.

If you plan on buying a Sony BDP-S1 or Pioneer Elite BLU-RAY player I would get the Mit WD-57731 since it has a 1080P/24 input.

Well i was planning on buying the ps3 but if i get the white lines coming up the screen again and there is nothing i can to do fix it like what happened the last time, then i plan on buying the new sammy that should come out later this month.

what is a 1080p/24 input anyway???? how does it effect the PQ

oh and on another thread i made you recommended the JVC-HD56FN97
i just checked a video review about it on cnet and the guy said that you CANT change the color settings on input channels, so when you watcha blu-ray movie are you stuck witht eh default settings??
and i saw some of the peoples reviews and they said that the green is too green like flourescent like a cartoon. is that true? how do you like your JVC??
and would you put it above the sammy 87W or mitsubishi wd-57731

Many of the 1080P monitors on the market are very close in picture quality when compared to each other. There is a sticky about 1080P/24 at the top of the Home theater forum that will give you more details about 1080P/24. Having both a BLU-RAY player and monitor that supports 1080P/24 is ideal for the best quality.
Check out this link for rear projector reviews from Home theater mag
http://www.hometheatermag.com/rearprojectiontvs/
Without reading a detailed review on a monitor it is hard to decide which model is better then another. Sometimes brand A will be better then brand B when comparing models and other times brand B will be better then brand A when comparing different models. For example JVC has some rear projectors that have been rated better then some Sony models, but this does not always mean that JVC is always better then Sony. Sometimes Sony has a better quality picture when compared to some JVC models.
For example the Feb 2007 home theater magazine has an in depth review of 6 HDTV rear projectors being faced off against each other. The winners was the Samsung out of all 6.

According to Home Theater here are the results of the 1080P RPTV face off
  • Samsung HL-S6188W DLP (over all rating 93), (Performance 95)
  • JVC HD-61FN97 LCOS (over all rating 91), (Performance 93)
  • Toshiba 62MX196 DLP (over all rating 90), (performance 92)
  • Sony KDS-R60XBR2 LCOS (over all rating 89) (performance 90)
  • Mitsubishi WD-65731 DLP (over all rating 87), (performance (85)
  • Olevia 565H LCOS (overall rating 85 (performance 83)

Even though the Samsung DLP was the winner in the face off, personally I would get the JVC LCOS since in the past single chip DLP have had issues with some people seeing rainbows or getting tired eyes. 3 chip DLP and LCOS do not have that issue. Most people claim all the modern day single chip DLP’s since they have a 5 segment color wheel that spins at 120HZ that this is no longer a issue. Perhaps that is correct since the Samsung DLP won the face off over the JVC LCOS display. The fact is single chip DLP has really improved over the years and sometimes is better quality then LCOS. I am sure LCOS technology will improve in quality to compete with the improved DLP that are now available.

Sorry, I don’t own a rear projector JVC yet and unable to answer your question about being able to preset color settings for different inputs. In the face off the Samsung was rated the best picture but they did not like the way the brightness could not be adjusted and they thought it was too bright.. Quote for Samsung in HT mag “This TV is way to bright. Don’t dismiss this it’s a real issue.” Still overall they rated it better then the JVC and Sony and MIT.
Since these 1080P displays are so close in quality some of these reviews and panels of people are nothing more then one person’s opinion over the other. The official specs are good info also.
On page 78 here is a quote that makes the JVC and Sony LCOS sets look bad “Color wasn’t the JVC’s strong suit. The Sony set was less accurate, but, interestingly, because all of the Sony’s colors were off uniformly, it wasn’t as objectable. The JVC, on the other hand, had a very over saturated green, white blue and red were less so.”
In theory the best quality 1080P display for BLU-RAY is one that accepts a 1080P/24 signal and refreshes it at 48HZ, 72HZ, 96HZ, or 120HZ. The only rear projector on the market that accepts 1080P/24 inputs are the entire Mitsubishi line. The problem is I have not read an official review that mentions how good the set handles 1080P/24 BLU-RAY material.

By far the following are the best displays on the market for picture quality when watching BLU-RAY discs.

Sony SXRD 1080P home theater Front Projector VPL-VW50 (Projection Picture Size: 40" to 300" measured diagonally) 96Hz

JVC DLA-HD1 Front Projector

Pioneer PRO-FHD1 1080P 50” Plasma 72Hz

You need a Sony BDP-S1 or Pioneer BDP-HD1 in order to take advantage of the 1080P/24 source material on BLU-RAY which will complete eliminate 3:2 pulldown problems.

On the Samsung DLPs, the gamma can be adjusted via the service menu and that will take care of the brightness issue.

Dipset420, I've got the JVC TV that CNET reviewed, the HD-56FN97. The only things I cannot adjust with HDMI feeds are the Digital VNR and MPEG NR, I think they are automatically set to off and on, respectively. I will check this in the morning. When Home Theater Magazine reviewed the 61" version of this, they said that out of the box its quality isn't the best, but that it is top-notch once adjusted, which I agree with fully. You can adjust all the normal video quality control options to whatever you like. The iris is not static, like the Sony, at least that is what I've read in reviews on it before I bought it. It adjusts while you're watching, so going from a dark room to a bright room has a good transition and you're not just blinded. Adjusting the brightness and picture settings allow for great customization. I wrote down the settings I prefer for lit and unlit viewing. The iris itself can also be adjusted, so when you watch with lights on you can make it brighter, and then darker when you watch a movie at night. Its auto-adjustment is a certain window of settings within your programmed setting. I love that feature.

Also, here is Home Theater Magazine's review of the 61" version: http://hometheatermag.com/rearprojec...06jvchd61fn97/

In the review the author says something along the lines of, "after adjusting the video settings, I couldn't throw a source at this TV that didn't look good."

My eyesight is about 20/10, I can read the bottom level of eyecharts, and I have no eye problems what-so-ever, so I constantly assess my picture quality. I can't get a DLP tv because I can see the rainbow effect on even the best of them. That is just to let you know how picky I get with my TVs. I did two weeks of research when buying mine, and in the end, for my budget, it came down to the Sony SXRD and the JVC HD-ILA. The JVC, to me, seemed to be a bit more set up for movie viewing, while the Sony seemed to be a little more balanced for viewing less than top-notch sources. I have a PS3 w/ HDMI hook-up (the TV does HDMI 1.3) and the movies look like the picture window all the time. I highly recommend this TV, just remember that you will need to adjust the video settings once you get it. If you want any more information, let me know.

Also, where can I read that face-off Home Theater mag had? I can't find that issue any more.

You might be able to purchase a back issue of the Feb 2007 magazine from the Home Theater website. I am sure there will be future face offs. At least once a year.
