Default spl meter

okay so i ran out to radio shack and bought a digital spl meter and i must be doing something wrong but i think i followed the spl thread posted here pretty closely. umm the meter from my listening postion will not pick up any sounds in any range except for 60. i have a yamaha rxv 663 and i have the volume at - 24 which is our usual listening volume for blu ry movies, i also blasted each individual speaker volume all the way up and nothing. i have the spl meter settings as follows

response fast
weighting c
range 80

i have no clue what i am doing wrong. also i thought the meter would help me eq my system but from what i read in the thread to my understanding its just to calibrate the speaker volume. maybe i need an av for dummies book. please some help
