Default 1080p problem

I have a new sony bdp-s300 into my yamaha htr-5990 av receiver then into my sharp aquos lcd t.v.All through hdmi cables. When the output of the blue ray is set to 1080p the picture is distorted. If I connect the blue ray directly to the tv,all is fine.what gives?

yep, inputs are correct.if i set the bd output to auto/1080i, through the receiver to the tv all is fine.if i set the bd output to 1080p, through the receiver, the pic is distorted but the sound is good.i also get a message that an unrecognized signal from the bd player is present(video).

For starters, welcome to the forum. It's a shame that your first post had to be due to a problem you are having!

What model is the Sharp TV?
Is this happening with all your movies?

Also, it's Blu-ray. No 'E' Some of us are touchy about that.

I guess what I'm really asking is why is my yamaha htr 5990 receiver not recognizing the 1080p video signal ?(only likes 1080i at max)

What model is your Sharp Aquos? If the native resolution is 720p it will show Blu Ray in 1080i. So unless the native resolution is 1080p, 1080i is the highest resolution you will get.

Thanks for the welcome. The tv is The Sharp LC-46D62U.And thanks for the heads up on the Blu-ray term.I only have Iron Man on Blu-ray.Like I say ,if I connect the bd directly to the tv ,all is fine.If I go through the receiver, the pic on 1080p is distorted.

I'm looking up info on that receiver now to see if it has any documented issues.

How long ago did you get it?

Going through the manual there is no mention at all of 1080p.

Also, surprisingly enough, that receiver does not decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master. Those are 2 of the 3 lossless audio codecs used on Blu-rays for high-quality audio.

Ok...so the receiver won't cut it?Dissapointing as it is a substantial piece of equipment.i tried running the hdmi cable directly to the tv and used component cables for audio and set the receiver to multi channel input. The pic is great(1080p) directly from the bd to tv but the sound is ,shall we say ,sub par.I guess I'm looking to up grade my receiver? so all parts can play nice together.

Visually wise, how different is 1080i to 1080p to your perception?

That is a pretty solid receiver, which is why I'm surprised that it doesn't decode those two lossless codecs.

I'm not a Yamaha guy - so I'm not familier with the video handling capabilities. I'm sure that during the day some people will come onto here and be able to shine some more light on this problem for you.

weird, it was my understanding that even if your receiver was 740p for instance that anything over that would pass through untouched and anything under would be upconverted to that, and since it has hdmi inputs....

Default ok...

What if I ran the hdmi directly to the tv and ran a digital optical cable directly to the receiver?(for sound only).Would I get the same sound as I did when I had the hdmi connected to the receiver? If so this would solve my 1080p picture issue and I would still get the best sound possible with this setup, yes?

The fiber optic would not give you the HD audio but other than that, it will work. I try and never run my video through a middle man if I can avoid it.

it looks like this would be your best option. you will not be able to get hd audio through toslink (optical) but it seems from arush's post above that your receiver does not decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio anyways. at lease you'll be getting the 1080p picture.

you may want to upgrade your receiver sometime in the future as you will be missing out on 1/2 of the hd experience

I have a denon receiver that does not have an hdmi input so I run my audio through the analog inputs and that seems to give a more fuller sound. Especially on older discs that have PCM 5.1. I would recommend trying this for now along with having an optical hooked up then A/B the two and see if you hear a difference and which one you prefer. I am pretty happy using the decoder in the 300 and have been impressed with the sound quality of doing it this way.
