Default Brainstorm (Maybe?)

looks like a FEB release is due from WB for BRAINSTORM Deluxe Edition ... wonder if they will announce a Blu Ray version soon?

I would *LOVE* to see Brainstorm get released on Blu-Ray! A very underrated fim IMO.

I'll think about Brainstorm for now. However, I still hated that it was Natalie Wood's final film, which was released two years after her death.

Brainstorm is a great movie, but I hope it gets remastered/restored prior to being released on Blu-ray as it looked quite awful on DVD.

I wonder how they'll handle the aspect ratio. The film prints were all 2:35:1 (except of course the 70mm prints), and the majority of the film plays windowboxed at 1.85 while the "HAT" scenes opened up to the full width of the screen.

On DVD, this works backwards, as the "real world" fills the screen and the "HAT" scenes are all letterboxed.

If they made the disc more like Brother Bear, they can successfully recreate the theatrical experience. I hope they consider it.

An aside on the death of Natalie Wood; I used to frequent the Isthmus bar where it all went down. I love that place but it's always had a pall over it since that day.

Whaaat? The hat scenes are in 2.35:1 and everything else is in 1.85. That's how it should be, right? How would they do it differently?

Actually in 1983, 35mm anamorphic prints would(should) be projected at 2.39

The 70mm prints would be 2.20, with the "hat" sequences made from 70mm negative and the real world ones blow-ups from standard widescreen 35mm. I seem to recall the number 1.66 mentioned with the 35mm sequences, but no, I didn't go measure the screen on those scenes when I saw it in a 70mm print. I was playing the mylar.

Maybe it was 1.66/2.20 in 70mm and 1.85/2.39 in 35mm prints.

I remember an early Laserdisc that squeezed the wider 70mm/"hat" shots into the 4:3 frame so those scenes looked like a bad trip.

Default The Brainstorm DVD

I got the DVD edition yesterday. It looks great, but it also confused me as to why didn't Warner go straight to the Blu-Ray edition?

The sequences shot with flat lenses are contained inside the aspect ratio meant for the scope, 70 mm, parts. It gives an interesting impact on the viewing experience, and most notably the sound is so widespread in the room, that it also enhances the difference in screen width.

I don't regret buying the DVD, because I had this movie in VHS and DVD before, an they were all bad. Surely, a Blu-Ray version would be the logic step, but perhaps might want us to wait a little big longer for that. What a shame!...

There is a brief scene where a man has the brainscan equipment on his head, and he is experiencing riding a rollercoaster. That's my dad

He was in business with the director Douglas Trumball at the time, he owned 50% of Showscan and financed most of the early Showscan movies.

Maybe we could have a Showscan BD at 1080i60?

Interesting. One of the things I deeply regret is 70 mm prints and exhibitions going down the drain back in the 1980's. It also coincides with the demise of large palace theaters in my home town.

My best movie going experience until today was with 70 mm projections, and perhaps the most beneficial aspect of Blu-Ray discs today is that they do justice to 65 mm negatives, clarity wise and sound wise!

I have been writing a small column for a group of journalists' website, called Webinsider, concerning audio and video applications, but a couple of months ago I decided to undergo a research about the closedown and demolition of Rio's theaters, and included a special article on 70 mm. The manuscripts have two versions in English, published at the in70mm site, which you may be interested to read:

http://www.in70mm.com/news/2009/brazil/index.htm
http://www.in70mm.com/news/2009/incol/index.htm

I am a captive fan of pionneers in the film business. Please accept my sincere congratulations. You didn't tell if you dad is still alive, but if he is, please extend my compliments to him too.
