I read about this before the ps3 launched. Because the ps3 is a super computer, it can be used for complex things. I've always wondered if someday, we'll have a cure for various diseases. The ps3 might just be what the doctor ordered.

Just to give a heads-up there is going to be a site where you can "donate" your PS3 to help cure Cancer. I think the project is called "folding@home". It's all over the news right now. Apparantly, Sony's new Cell processor can do the work of 10 processors. Look into it guys. This is only going to help Sony, Cancer research and yes.... Blu-ray sales (I hope

The folding app can be done with practiacly any PC, that was made in the last 5 years. It uses idle processing power to process virtual gene folding and send the results to science research data bases.
this very technique probably was invented quite a while ago (of course today they probably could do more calculations at a single time then ever before), and were runing on a room full of Supercomputers then, which processing power can be housed in a small home desktop today (imagine a Super compuer of the 80's and compare it to a Desktop of today). Then you have thousands and thousands of people online do a small peice of the puzzle. Who needs to have a room full of new Super Servers costing hundreds of thousands of dollars to setup and and many thousands of dollars to upkeep each year? But then again could folding be a way for your government to spy on you? ![]() |
