Default Weird issue with Onkyo 705 and PS3

Hi Folks

Trying to set up my new Onkyo 705 and I'm having a very strange issue. Using the 705 as a video switcher I've got an Apple TV in HDMI 1 and the PS3 in HDMI 2. The ATV works fine but the PS3 has a static-y image (sound seems fine). Plugging the PS3 directly into the TV, it looks fine. Plugging the ATV into HDMI 2, it looks fine. Plugging PS3 into HDMI 1 it looks static-y. Since it doesn't seem to be a problem with the PS3 output, or the Onkyo inputs, what is it about my PS3 signal that the Onkyo doesn't like? I'm stumped!

Sean

have you used the same cable when plugging it straight into the TV as you were when you plugged it through the onkyo?

Yeah, it was the same cable. Unplugged from the Onkyo, then straight into the TV. Perfect picture. Tried the same cable that the Apple TV is using and it also makes the PS3 look like crap. Very irritating, especially when I can't find this problem anywhere else online

Okay, so I switched my PS3 display settings so that the max output is 720p. Now the image looks fine. However, my Apple TV is outputting on 1080p and it also looks fine. So now I have to figure out why the Onkyo doesn't like my PS3's 1080p output!

I have an onkyo 705 and ps3 and have never run into this problem. When you mean staticy is that the same thing as say snowy? Try borrowing a friends ps3 and see if you have the same issues.

Yeah, "snowy" is a good way to describe it If you get a chance, do you mind checking what your video and audio outputs are set at on your PS3? I'm sure it's something simple, but for now I'm content to leave it on 720p. It's been a long day and I'm not in the mood to troubleshoot

My ps3 detected 1080p on initial startup as well as audio through hdmi. I did however have to go through the audio section and manual check off every box since for some reason my ps3 was only detected 2ch audio. Now it's all good though. Maybe your ps3 hdmi socket is screwed up or dusty or something??? IDK spray some of that air in a can stuff...worth a try I guess.

So which audio output did you leave checked on the PS? Right now all of my output options are selected. I'll check the HDMI port on the PS3, but the output from the PS3 is fine when I plug directly into the TV. It's something about going through the 705 that's screwing up the signal. I've also tried setting the output on the PS3 to 1080i and the 705 handles that fine. Just doesn't like the 1080p signal. Very strange.

I have the same plugged into mine and its fine. If it was the outgoing cable to the tv youd think it would do it on all sources. what kind of tv do you have?

It's a Sony 55A3000. I agree that you'd think the problem would be more consistent. It definitely seems like the problem occurs inside the 705. When I get home tonight I'm going to start unplugging other components to see if there's any kind of conflict that might be unique to my setup. Failing that, I might have to send this bad boy back

Honestly I checked off every box. Hmm...this thing has got me stumped.

Yeah me too I'm going to try a few things when I get home. Maybe I've got some electrical interference with the subwoofer or something painfully simple like that. Fingers crossed.

Okay this gets stranger and stranger. The PS3 interface looks like crap (snowy with green lines moving through it) when set to 1080p. HOWEVER, when I play a 1080p bluray movie it looks fine! When I play a 720p PS3 game it looks fine! When I play a 1080p PS3 game it looks like crap!! Play an upscaled DVD, looks like crap!! Play non-upscaled DVD, looks fine!

I'm starting to take this personally, except I can't decide who to beat up, the PS3 or the 705

Does anyone think this might be something flaky with the rights-protection aspect of HDMI? Obviously, the signal is coming through strong b/c it works under certain circumstances. Does anyone know what kind of processing goes on within the HDMI circuit of the 705? I thought it was supposed to be a straight pass through, but it seems not

If anyone cares, it was a cable issue. Nothing wrong with the cables it seems, just tried every possible combination of cables between my PS3/AppleTV and TV and finally got it to work. Apple TV is still working fine too, so I'm thinking the PS3 is just finicky about certain cables.

you found the problem
