Default Blu-ray aims to oust DVDs within three years

Quote:
"HANOVER, Germany (Reuters) - The Blu-ray disc association said on Thursday it aimed to replace the DVD storage format within three years.

"Within three years it will just be Blu-ray," Frank Simonis, the Blu-ray Disc Association's European chairman, said at the CeBIT technology trade show."

The HD DVD promotional group, in a separate presentation, said consumers should not only focus on the big blockbuster titles from Hollywood, but also those from regional film houses in Europe and Asia which would bring many titles to HD DVD because it was cheaper and simpler.

That is hilarious. "Cheaper and simpler"???

Bring on the blu-rays and I'll replace every DVD in my collection.

That's an assinine statement. DVD JUST surpassed VHS in sales of players and content I believe. DVD will be around for more than three more years.
Hopefully hd-dvd will not though.

I think he means that Blu-ray sales will be far above SD DVDs, otherwise that would be a HD DVD-like statement. I say that because I can still walk into a Wal-Mart, Fry's Electronics, MovieStop, etc. and still buy VHS tapes if I wanted to, but DVD has been on everyone's lips for quite some time now.

Maybe not surpass in sales, but just in popular usage. Like Damon Payne said, DVD just passed VHS not too long ago. But even when they were still behind, the majority of people were forgetting about VHS. Even though DVD hasn't been around as long as VHS was before DVD, the BR assoc. may just want BR to be the format of choice, like DVD was before it surpassed VHS.

I understand where they are coming from with this statement but in reality in surpassing DVD it is not a question of DVD vs Blu-ray it is a question of how much in price will HDTV's come down. Blu-ray's ability to succeed is 100% dependant on how soon prices drop lower on HDTV's.

3 years is impossible...but I don't think DVD will go away completely for another 8-10 years....

they even still make VHS for some movies...and EVERYONE has a DVD player....

Hey, I love Blu-ray but that's a nutty prediction. Though technically BD is growing at faster rate than when DVD first started, it is simply impossible that it will replace the format in 3 years.

Though if it did, I wouldn't complain

To be frank, I think DVD will be around for a long time and co-exist with Blu-Ray just fine.

At least that's what I'm seeing for the next 10 years.

I think what they are really saying is that BD sales will surpass DVD sales in 3 years. DVD isn't going anywhere for the next decade. Way too many people will never own an HDTV or even a receiver, so BD will offer them nothing over DVD.

DVD was a HUGE upgrade to VHS, not just a big picture and sound improvement, but no rewinding, instant jump to any part of the movie, smaller media, interactive menus etc.. Now BD really only offers improved sound and picture, and only to those with the right equipment. DVD quality is also plenty for most people. My wife wouldn't notice the difference of BD or VHS and could care less, like many people. She won't even change the channel from SD to the HD channel to watch a show. I know that sounds crazy to you and me, but some people really don't care about the quality of the picture and sound. DVD is as good as it will ever get for standard tvs and so it will last as long as people own non HDtvs, which will be a long long time.

I'd say year 2011.

So I predict it to happen in four years (from now).
