Default What the **** happened to Hamlet?!

When Branaugh's Hamlet was announced last year, they announched the Blu-ray and HD-DVD versions at the same time. We know happaned to the HD-DVD version but where is the Blu-ray version?! We know there is a sweet 1080p transfer sitting somewhere at Warners, so where is it?!

There's actually someone besides me wanting Hamlet on BD!!!

It took them what 10 year to release a DVD? Hopefully it won't take another 10 for a BD.

I'm in the mood to watch Hamlet now, thanks

Didn't get a chance to see it in the theater & I can't imagine the DVD does justice to 65mm. Wonder what the odds are on Warner releasing a 4 hour film with lossless audio?

I'll take a side of Henry V with that Hamlet....and Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.

When the movie was released in mid 1990s, it only played in a few theaters in the U.S. I saw it in 70mm presentation in Los Angeles with awesome sound. The theater was sold out and full of actors/actresses, directors, etc. At the end of the movie, they all got up and gave it a standing ovation. I believe Sony released it in the U.S. Let's hope Sony gets the right to release the Blu-ray version. I have no desire to buy anything from Warner. BD would do it justice, but the DVD is better than the VHS copy that I recorded off Showtime years ago. I wore that out lol
Hamlet with lossless audio! That would be sweet.

Aren't we all????

It will most likely be released in a double box set release with Hamlet 2.

You're kidding right...?

Hamlet 2 has nothing to do with Hamlet.

NO way would a box set be released with these two movie together. I have no interest in Hamlet 2 and I'm sure most people who enjoy Shakespeare would say the same.

Averaging almost 40 posts/day over 4 days...something vaguely familiar about that infected stranger.

I'll admit to a vague interest in Hamlet 2 because I was a high school theater geek. Not interested enough to have seen it, though.

I liked the Zeffirelli Hamlet much more than I expected. I'm not a Mel Gibson fan but I thought he was pretty decent, and there were many really good performances---Glenn Close, Ian Holm, Alan Bates. Derek Jacobi was masterful. I've never seen the Michael Almereyda film with Ethan Hawke and I'm not sure I really want to, but ultimately I think I'll have to check out Bill Murray as Polonius and Sam Shepard as Hamlet's father.

It's been ages since I've seen the Olivier or Burton versions. I'd like to think we'll get to see the former on BD at some point (go Criterion!), but I doubt "Electronovision" will translate well in high definition.

But my inner purist demands to see the whole show, and Branagh's production is the only place to see it on film.

Hamlet's a prestige project, so I would be optimistic of a first-class treatment. IF space is an issue they would simply stretch the movie across two discs as on DVD.

Considering that Warner released the DVD (and did a great job), there isn't much chance of Sony doing the BD.

I waited to watch this on DVD because I didn't want to see it on VHS. When it finally came to DVD I was already more interested in Blu-Ray. I hope they hurry before I get my holodeck.

+1. 2007 was the year when several of my favorite movies/shows finally got released on DVD (Hamlet, O Lucky Man). I even started a thread on AVS asking Warner not to shortchange Hamlet for HDM... Turns out they skipped it altogether!

Yeah i was hoping for some of those back catalog titles to be released on BLU like o lucky man and performance, Petulia, I know I like some of these harder to sale titles... very dissapointed they didn't announce Watership Down on blu yet... they just re-issued the dvd for it. There aren't a lot of animated titles on Blu ray yet so it is great timing they could sale even more of Watership Down this way.

I am thrilled with the BLU announcement of Being There

Easily my Post Of The Year, but with your saturation style of posting there was always a chance you'd been the running eh?

As for the on-topic stuff, I'm in for this when it's released.

Considering how film scanning technology has improved, I would prefer it if the 65mm elements Hamlet were treated to a modern scan in at least 4K resolution (or perhaps even 6K or 8K if it isn't an enormous amount of trouble).

Blu-ray is not kind towards movies with old, soft HD telecine transfers.

I can't wait for this one. I have the two-disc special edition. This is the definitive Hamlet. Olivier's version is a classic because it introduced America to Shakespeare, but Brahagh's version is a fully realized presentation of the play. I am a high school English teacher (first year) and I am going to show them several scenes from this film. To all those who fawn over the Zeffirelli's Shakespearean productions, enough. Mel Gibson as Hamlet? I don't think so. Anyway, I will get this the second it is released. Great film.
