It is only 400 discs? Some of the members here already have surpassed that count.

Default Blu-Ray Rippers & Encoders

Eventually, you'll be able to rip and store blu-rays onto your hard drive. I'll wait for that to happen. Once it starts to happen, studios won't be able to stop it.

It would be nice to just hit a tab on your computer and play any movie or music blu-ray. This would be just as easy and convenient as mp3s for music. I already store all my music as mp3s on my ps3 which is very nice. It's nice not having to find and insert audio cds. No cds to store, scratch, or lose.

It'll happen sooner...than later.

Might even get to the point where they buy one per genre! That would be scary, set it up to just randomly play sci-fi movies all weekend, or all western movies. That would be cool for room parties at a con or something though.

That's not going to happen. Doing that would require circumventing copy protection which is illegal unauthorized copying of copyrighted material.

We don't advocate that here.

And let's not forget the whole reason that we have Blu-ray is for uncompressed audio and video. You can't get the same quality on a compressed file. Otherwise, you're talking storage in TB (or higher, anyone know what 1,000 TB is?) just to be able to store all the information on a decent-sized blu-ray collection. This has been discussed several times before, and I'm just not seeing it happening on a large scale...

1,000 TB is a Petabyte, followed by an Exabyte (now that's big!)

Well, technically a petabyte would be 1024 terabytes.

As much as some (or most) of you might disagree with me. I personally like to see my collection with their respected genre in my movie cabinets. And I truely enjoy opening that cabinet that houses all those blue colored cases. But hey, thats me!!

I wouldn't mind a 5 disk changer, but I don't see a need for a 400 disk changer! A 5 disk one is good for watching entire seasons over a weekend, you can just veg in bed and switch disks to the next one with the press of a button. It's great for that lazy 3 day weekend.

They're also great for my periodic Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Veg-a-thon. I only have to get up once to replace the first disc of Fellowship with the last disc of Return of the King.
