Default HD Tuner problem....

I just bought the Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK, and I'm having an issue with the OTA signals it is picking up. I have it hooked up to a Samsung LN40A650. The 650 picks up five more HD channels than the Panny does, plus a couple more regular stations. The unit is set up so that the coax runs in to the Panny, and then a cable runs from the Panny to the 650. How is it possible that I'm getting better reception on the TV itself, when it's picking up its feed from the Panny? One thing to note is that we bought a new Coax cable when we bought the TV, and are using it. The cable may or may not have mentioned that it is plated so that it picks up signals better. Is this what the problem is? Do I just need to buy a new antenna, due to the coax used in it is much older (10 years or longer?) I'd hate to shell out yet another $40 so that I can record all of the stations that my 650 picks up....

Thanks for the help!
