Sony KF60WE610

While it may accept a 1080i signal, the internal LCD panal is only 783*1395 or some such. The specs dong give me a dimension of the grid, only that there are 1,092,168 pixels

Samsung HL-S5087 here. Great TV, holding me over until full featured LCDs or OLEDs appear.

37" LCD HDTV up to 1080i (but can accept 1080p signal even though it's not listed, but can't show the true power of 1080p).

However, Blu-Ray movies still look remarkable in 720p/1080i on a 37" widescreen LCD HDTV while DVD movies in general look much more soft and even less colourful.

Not surprising there's a lot of 1080p votes (considering the forum).

Well, 1,092,168 pixels is equivalent to 784 x 1393 square pixels in a 16:9 shape, so you should vote for 720p (a better fit may had been a 768p voting option, but 720p it's close enough I guess)

1080i/1080p brings up a question of how the panel deinterlaces a 1080i signal. 1080i CRTs are of course 1080i, but a 1080 x 1920 fixed pixel display that accepts 1080i, ends up displaying that as a 1080 x 1920 progressive grid. The question is if how they deinterlace 24fps, 30fps, or 60i material (25fps and 50i too if they have that capability). Does the display reproduce the full vertical 1080 detail with film material? With video material? with static images? with moving images? or does it achieve only down to 540 etc?

Banjo, you say yours accepts 1080p but can't show the true power of 1080p. What do you mean? If it's a 1080 x 1920 panel and accepts 1080p shouldn't it give you 1080p?
(Or maybe it's a 720 x 1280 or 768 x 1366 pixel 37" LCD? <- Then you should have voted 720p. Banned! just kidding )

Maybe replies could specify things in terms like 720p panel/1080p input or 1080p panel/1080i input deinterlaced correctly or bobbed etc

In any case, remember that even if a TV accepts 10,000p it's the panel's ultimate on screen pixel count resolution that "counts"

1080i but does a great job. Hard to justify replacing and I may go the projector route when I do.
