Default Dark Knight Blu-ray Resolution Question?

Is the resolution Dark Knight in Blu-ray same as the Dark Knight prologue in the Batman Began Preview?

It has an alternating resolution depending on whether we are watching an IMAX scene or a scene filmed on 35mm film. The aspect ratio will alternate from 2.40:1 to 1.66:1.

EDIT: It has an alternating aspect ratio, not alternating resolution. I got to slow down when I type

I thought they were going to convert it to 1:78:1 or something like that?

That would defeat the purpose of having it in IMAX which is designed to show of verticality.

The resoultion will be the same, yes (1080p). The aspect ratio, however is going to change during the film just like the IMAX experience.

WRONG, the Dark Knight is the first and only movie shot entirely with IMAX camera, so the movie will have a consistence resolution, but of cousre the end product would be determined by how the studio want the film to look.

Director Christopher Nolan originally wanted to shoot the entire movie in IMAX but the cost of shooting the whole movie was not in the budget. Only about 20 minutes of The Dark Knight was shot in IMAX.

The entire movie will be at 1080p. The IMAX footage will be cropped to a 1:78:1 aspect ratio for Blu-Ray, the 35mm footage will remain at it's originally 2:40:1 aspect ratio.

The resolution of the actual motion picture image area (not the black bars) will change/increase during the IMAX bits.

If the IMAX bits are on the disc at 1.78:1 they will be using the entire 1920x1080 for the moving picture image. For the rest, if 2.35:1, it will only be using around 1920x817 for the resolution of the moving picture area, the rest being made up of pure black bars.

Also, IMAX has higher resolution to 35mm film so the resolution (amount of detail in the scenes) may look higher on those scenes on Blu-ray even without the use of more screen pixels (that full 1.78:1 encodes use).

Dumb question maybe but...If you've seen the image of the back part of the cover

Why does it say just 2.4:1? Wouldn't they put both ratios? Hurm.

Actually, the budget constraints weren't his main problem. The main problem is that IMAX cameras are so loud that it makes the dialogue-heavy scenes very difficult to shoot. And Nolan, of course, is a storyteller first and foremost, not an action director. A vast majority of TDK is dialogue-driven.

Where the hell did you get the idea that the entire movie was shot with an IMAX camera? It is a well known fact that it is only certain scenes.

I can't find the article to quote, there are so many TDK IMAX articles out there. But from what it said, Nolan wanted to shoot the whole movie in IMAX, WB said no it was going to be too costly so instead of not doing it at all Nolan decided to shoot select scenes.

Your right, the cameras are loud but that's what dubbing dialog is for.

Nolan doesn't dub dialog. Otherwise Heath Ledger's vocal performance wouldn't have been captured. His vocal work was captured during principal photography. By the way, WB said that the IMAX cameras were provided for free.

Here's a direct quote from Nolan on it:

"So, I would be interested in shooting a whole film in IMAX. The big hurdle to doing that is um, it's very, very hard to see how you do dialogue scenes, because the cameras are so noisy. And the lenses are so wide, you're shooting this conversation, the cameras go you know, 18 inches from your nose, basically, and it sounds like one of those small portable generators. That's about the level of volume of it. So to just speak over that and to act as if that's not there is very tough."

im not too sure about that. If the imax cameras were so large and loud, they would not be able to capture sound on set. so he would pretty much have to do dubbing

I thought he had finished dubbing. Just out of curiosity, is it someone else that says "stranger" in the opening when he goes "I believe what ever doesn't kill you, simply makes you... stranger." Because it sounds nothing like him. I know they tried to add bass to the voice, but it still doesn't sound right.

Anyway, I know Gary Oldman on Conan said that when they were using the IMAX cameras, they had to try to restrain their acting so I wouldn't be surprised if that also was a factor when deciding to go 35mm.
