Great article that finally has some positive things and puts in to perspective how the PS3 is out selling faster than the Xbox 360. So why is it that people say the PS3 is a failure when it is clearly selling more units than the Xbox in the same time period? Is it just the media manipulating things as usual?
Sony’s Plan: PS3, PSP, Bravia HDTV’s and Blu-ray http://www.product-reviews.net/2008/...s-and-blu-ray/ Every console Sony has ever made has lost an absolute fortune at the start, they can afford to do this because their consoles last for 8-10 years. In addition the PS3 compliments their other business - next gen consoles help drive sales of Bravia HDTV’s, the PS3 helped ensure Blu-ray became the next format - saving Sony the millions it would have cost to scrap it (see Toshiba) and giving them a potentially lucrative new revenue stream. It really annoys me when people ignorant to how business works look at things in such black and white ways - PlayStation is probably the most important brand Sony own, and brand power is 9/10th of the law in the businesses Sony operate. Also look at how sales of the PSP have picked up since the PS3 launched and it’s various complementary services. And let’s not forget that Sony have 23 or so successful game developers/publishers. So that’s Sony covered, now what about Microsoft? Clearly the person who wrote this article has fallen for all the big talking spin MS put out. Let’s think - the 360 still cost them a fortune to develop, though granted not quite as much as the PS3, the 360 was plagued with hardware faults and the warranty issue that has cost them billions, now they have slashed their prices and sell at a loss (do you honestly think the 360 Arcade makes them any money?!), they spend an absolute fortune on advertising, and let’s not forget the huge sums of money they pay developers just to get games on their system or more recently to pay for DLC. Don’t be under any illusions that the 360 is some sort of Wii-style success story, any success the 360 has is a result of Microsoft’s open wallet policy. And remember now that 3rd party titles are getting hard to buy MS only have around 3 developers to rely on. Then let’s look at sales - MS launched the 360 a year early ( 1 1/2 years in some regions) and it’s sold 22M or so, the PS3 launched a year or more later and has sold 16M, in other words the PS3 is selling at a faster rate. Some people really do have a funny idea what counts as a failure! If the PS3 ends up outselling the 360 by the end of this cycle it’s more likely it will be Microsoft that will be wondering whether it’s worth continuing, not Sony. Then you have to consider what MS will add to their next console? HD movie disc playback? High capacity storage medium? More advanced form of processor? In other words all the things the PS3 already has. More likely it will be an incremental PC style upgrade to piggy back on PC Games. I can’t see the next Xbox doing anything outside of the box, look what they’ve done for far of the 360:Scene It = Buzz Lips = SingStar In the Movies = EyeToy Avatars = Miis NXE = the love child of the XMB and Wii Channels In other words they’re completely devoid of original ideas unless they can buy them or copy them. Now look at the PS3 - still hugely popular despite what the fanboy Sony-hating blog posters like to claim - it has an unique cutting-edge processor that people are now starting to understand - it has more than ample storage - it has the makings of a very compelling online community infrastructure. In other words Sony is highly likely to keep these core technologies in the PS4 meaning it will be much cheaper to make and much easier for developers to get up and running. To say any of the big 3 won’t be in the next gen race is frankly ill thought-out stupidity, and if I had to put money on one withdrawing, my money would be on Microsoft before Sony… Last edited by Porfie; 10-25-2008 at 05:49 PM. |

his post isn't that the 360 is bad. just stating it is ridiculous to think the ps3 is a failure. it isn't exactly a hit like the wii but think how cheap the ps4 will be. imagine most of the hard R&D was done developing the cell and blu-ray. all they do this time is expand ram, bigger hd, faster blu-ray speed reader, newest cell processor. blam....put it in a sweet looking case and you are set (of exaggerated maybe but its still true). microsoft is the one that has to really decide what they want to do. go with a simple upgrade...go totally downloadable....use blu-ray?? i mean they will have to really really invest and take chances. sony took their knockout blow this gen. they sucked it up and said we are taking a huge leap of faith...and while certainly they have felt the effects they have definately survived. they will be stronger moving forward...while they typically release a new console every 5-7 years will they skip a whole generation?? i think sony might. ps3 is very future proof if you ask me. i think it could survive the next xbox without an upgrade. now that might be shocking.

Even if Sony went half way into the next gen with the PS3 that would be a smart move because they could release an even better console in the middle which would technically be starting a new gen and getting the majour support first.

I don't understand you guys. Why does it have to be xbox vs ps3 all the time. They are both great systems that have some differences. They are both doing well the video game market is setting all sorts of sales records even with the economy in its current state. Their is room out there for all 3 systems. the numbers you guys were throwing out 22 million xboxes and 16 million ps3s means that they are both here to stay and are both making money. So why all of the hate frankly competition is a good thing with out it there would be no need to innovate. Sony keeps microsoft on its toes and vise versa. Without the original xbox we would still be playing ps2 because sony would have had no need to change. Guys really lighten up and just enjoy what you have.

The 30%+ failure rate is for 'first year' of ownership. The actual failure rate is much higher as time goes on. It's the reason Microsoft is caught up in a massive class action lawsuit in California right now (they knew it was faulty and released it anyway). Even a three year warranty (after denying to help millions of people previously) isn't long enough for a box that you _know_ is going to fail. Essentially, when you buy an Xbox360 you know you get three years (minus a few weeks of shipping replacements most likely) and that's it. Anything else is bonus time. Ever wonder how Microsoft came to the three year figure? 30% times three... Guess they figured all 360's would fail at least once in that time frame of three years.
For me, that is the one of only two real reasons not to buy a 360. It is an otherwise good console that brings a lot of PC games to a console market. It's not fair; however, to compare it's price directly to a PC that would play the same games since almost all homes already own a PC. Upgrading a video card or processor isnt' nearly the cost of building an entire box, for example, and it's real cheap to get 360 quality in that regard. Which leads to my second reason: I can get 99% of 360 games on my PC already and have no trouble running them 10x better (and even on my 50" plasma). Not everyone has this situation; however, so it is limited in it's scope. And, yes, there are some new titles like Gears of War 2 that they 'say' will not be on PC but I honestly can't think of another title besides that one that exists that I care about. I'm also pretty sure that at some point GeoW2 will be on PC. They never tell the truth when they are trying to use it to push consoles. The OP story was pretty right on. That fact is still the fact and that is that the PS3 has outsold the 360 for the same period of time. His other statements, though not as direct, are also pretty right on. Eventually Microsoft will have to realize that they must put bluray into their next console or go download only. The latter is simply not realistic, the former is easy but will require a massive ego hit and could stir the market to finally realize how far behind the technology in the 360 really is. |

![]() ![]() I have to agree with this. I have all three consoles. I've had the 360 since launch. But it's now been a dust collector for the last 18 months (I guess I should turn it on to see if it still works)... and haven't been impressed enough with the 360 exclusives of late. Just once I got the PS3, it was hard to go back ![]() |

The next Xbox will probably have the following: 7.1 LPCM sound, Deep Color support, media card reader, standard HDD in every console, web browser, Gigabit Ethernet, built-in WiFi, build reliability, Blu-ray, etc. The PS3 already has those things and MORE! And, if the developers start using procedural textures to a great degree, it might be tough to notice a difference between the next Xbox 1st gen games and the PS3. |

I wonder if a mod will delete this thread?
I thought that there was no flamming/trolling allowed. How is this not fanboyism? Ridiculous. The 360 is better than the ps3 in every way that matters. |

no blu-ray...you have to pay 100 for wireless you have to pay for online and it gets the red ring... the few people i know with 360 say they have had to send them for repairs 2 or 3 times...and they dont even say the games are fun they constantly talk about achievments which starts to get annoying...most want to buy ps3 but dont have the money after buying all the 360 crap to make it equal a ps3....and they cant even pay anyone to take it off there hands now..lol whatever floats your boat i guess... |
