I'm excited about this. I'm a tokusatsu fan and this release gives me hope some of my favorite toku heroes will be on Blu too.

No subs = big letdown. The lack of official Ultra anything in the states is appalling.

That's one of the things I like about Blu-Ray: movies from Japan, the only country besides the US that I would get movies from, is in the same region code as the US. While the lack of subs is a pain, we can at least play Japanese Blus normally. I had to alter my DVD player to play Japanese DVDs. (Not a day goes by where I appreciate Blu-Ray ).

Same here. Asian cinema in general is my favorite so having the same A region is great. Unfortunately, Japanese Blu Rays (like DVDs) are over priced and rarely have subs. Thank God for Hong Kong and Deltamac.

Complete opposite for me! UK and Japan both used to be Region 2 on DVD, now on Blu-ray Japan's Region A and the UK's Region B!

As for the English subtitles, including them can have a negative effect when selling distribution rights overseas (especially now they're the same region as North America), as distributors can assume a fair number of fans will have already imported the discs from Japan. At the same time, the studios in Japan will probably assume they will make far more money selling distribution rights overseas than exporting individual discs to fans abroad, and don't want to harm any potential arrangement.

I believe that's the theory they work on, at least with Toho and their Godzilla discs. I wouldn't be too surprised if Toho's agreement with Sony for their U.S. rights actually prohibits Toho from including English subtitles on their Godzilla discs in Japan.

Man, the UK got better Japanese DVD releases than Japan did...

Most of what we got was great, but as far as kaiju/tokusatsu go we haven't really got anything. I guess it's a rather niche genre though.

Actually, I was reading an interview with Stuart Galbraith recently, who had an interesting view on the whole subtitle issue:

http://www.ryuganji.net/2008/09/25/i...e-filmography/
Quote:
I think also there’s a proprietary attitude by the Japanese toward their own cinema, a feeling by some Japanese that, for instance, foreigners can never truly understand Ozu, that movies like that are really for their consumption alone, and not the world’s. Here in Japan, you can routinely buy DVDs of Hollywood movies for under 1,000 yen while most Japanese DVDs are ludicrously expensive, usually 4,800 to 6,000 yen apiece. I asked Donald Richie once why he thought Japanese home video labels almost never provide English subtitles on their DVDs, and he had a very interesting answer: “Battaa kusai” (”stinks like butter”). In other words, by putting English subtitles on the disc, you ran the risk of “tainting” it with the whiff of Americaness, a foreigner accessibility, therefore somehow making it less purely “Japanese.” I tend to agree with Donald Richie.
Going back to THE SUPER 8 ULTRA BROTHERS, Tsuburaya Productions have released a little trailer for the upcoming Blu-ray/DVD release:

Sorry to hear that.

Hope this helps.

If Toho can't put subtitles on their release so that they can sell the rights to Sony, I'll be okay with that. I'll still prefer Toho's releases. Plus, it'll give me a reason to learn Japanese.

Is anyone going to get this title? I would like to hear how good the release.

Yes! I have mine on pre-order. I'll probably review it for SciFi Japan, but regardless, I'll post some computer captures from the Blu once it arrives.

Those caps just made me want the disc all the more but not without subs. Those days are over.
