Japanese electronics giant Sony may cut the price of its PlayStation 3 by $100 worldwide in October, according to an analyst with Goldman Sachs.

Interesting article. Sony has estimated that by May the worldwide demand for PS3 might stabilize and there will be plenty of PS3 on the shelves for people that want one. The advantage of fewer integrated components is higher reliability and cheaper prices. As soon as Sony can start squeezing components on less surface mount chips the prices on the PS3 will come down. Sony is losing $200 or $300 on each machine they sale. Possible if the demand slows down for the PS3 then October would be a ideal time for Sony to introduce a price cut of $100. Doing so would sale more machines for the Christmas season.

Cutting the BOM cost is a great move. But cutting the price now is not.
The units without the Emotion Engine are cheaper to manufacture and thus will be needed to partially recoup the loss on the earlier models. I believe a price cut this year is highly unlikely, especially when more killer games are yet to be released. It may take 24 months for the first price cut to appear. Analysts at Goldman Sachs or anywhere can predict lots of things but not all of them would come true. fuad |

Keep in mind, for the European launch, Sony replaced the PS2 chip, the Emotion Engine with a software emulator to minimize the retail price. As a result, The European PS3s cannot play the amount of PS2 games American PS3s can (500 compatible PS2 games vs. 1000 for Americans). (Here's the article: http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/871.html) If Sony decides to have a price cut in October, EXPECT to see less backwards compatibility on the new shipments of revised PS3s. I bought mine for $600, but I can play all the PS2 games I have on top of all the other PS3 features...

Emulation is the way forwards as it will lead to upscaling of PS2 games to 720p/1080i. Sony are quite a forward thinking company recently (weird, I know) and all of the stuff they are doing for the PS3 is going to make it great, and cheaper.

Hypothetically: If you knew the price was going to drop $100 would you take it back today and get it for that much cheaper in 2 months?
If I was gauranteed of this I would definately take it back around August/September and pick it up again later. |

If this is true, this was a bad time to announce this price cut for later this year. Now, people will want to wait 'til that time frame to buy. This should have been leaked at the end of August. Even more big named titles would be available (not to mention "home" would be in full effect) and people would begin to really thirst for a PS3.

Actually, I diss that EE+GS bullcrap....
As Maxpower1987 stated, "Emulation is indeed the way to go"...PERIOD Plus, it would PLAY BETTER AND FASTER using the software emulation program running at 480 or 576 resolution. Go to the options and you have the choice to allow for upscaling of PS2 games to 720p/1080i. I also can't wait for their shift to 65 nanometer components for the PS3 this year. Now that alone would reduce the heat produced by the console and this means that fan can spin slower. Now I can have a next-gen console that is 100% QUIET hahaha ![]() |

A price cut seems very unlikely soon. I was surprised to read that sony would not include a ps2 chip inside of euro ps3's but if that is going to cut down the cost, then so be it. Even if sony did put a ps2 chip inside euro ps3's, they would still need to have a firmware update for the chip because there are reports of certain ps2 and ps1 games not working 100% on the ps3 so either way, you're looking at firmware updates, as a chip doesn't solve problems 100%.
