Default Interview: Nolan on Batman 3

A new interview with director Christopher Nolan has been posted in the LA Times. In this excerpt he addresses the future of the Batman series (with great ambiguity):

"Well ... let me think how to put this. There are two things to be said. One is the emphasis on story. What’s the story? Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question. On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name? [Laughs.] At the same time, in taking on the second one, we had the challenge of trying to make a great second movie, and there haven't been too many of those either. It’s all about the story really. If the story is there, everything is possible. I hope that was a suitably slippery answer."

Nolan also states in the interview he did not intend for Joker to be in the 3rd film, that he was taking it one movie at a time and never purposely intends for sequels (which most people know already).

there will be a 3rd and he'll be part of it....he's just selling the future story as something epic, because otherwise "it wouldn't be done"...

I hope they don't make another one. I fear another Spiderman 3 may come.

I still don't understand how Raimi ****ed up Spiderman after the greatness of number 2. I kind of want Nolan to move onto a new project.

greedy f-ing studios. WB would be smart not to get in the way of Nolan's vision should he do a 3rd.

Spiderman 3 is not as horrible as you guys think. To be scared about a Batman 3 because you hate Spiderman 3 is absolutely idiotic.

if anyone can do it and do it well, i believe nolan is that man. i think he cares to much for this character to let it become another Batman & Robin.

whoa man chill i dont think anyone is saying that. people are saying because spiderman 2 was such a big success, there was a lot of pressure from studios on raimi when making 3 and they wanted him to make it bigger than he intended i.e. they messed with his vision. people are concerned WB may do that with nolan, especially after the box office records the dark knight broke....granted nolan won't let his series become controlled by studios so i'm not worried, especially by his answer in the interview. he is focused on story above all else. if anyone can make a 2nd sequel great it's nolan.

It's because Rami and his brother wrote the script for 3. The studio gave him more control and he blew it. He is a fine director though and that is why he is still on for the 4th installment .. but not as a script writer as well.

Nolan can stay fresh by moving onto a different property and then IF he finds a good idea then he should do a third Batman.

Raimi needs to take a break with another Evil Dead then make Spiderman 4 and 5

They are saying it. "I still don't understand how Raimi ****ed up Spiderman after the greatness of number 2. I kind of want Nolan to move onto a new project." and " I hope they don't make another one. I fear another Spiderman 3 may come." Maybe I should have quoted it in my reply.

The story is they gave him unprecedented control. Maybe Spidey 3 is not applicable here and it's more a PotC 3 situation? But like you say, Nolan is not going to let that situation happen to him.

All Chris Nolan does is make good story telling movies I think the 3rd installment will be equal to the first 2 movies if it is cast right as well. I mean come on when we first heard Heath Ledger was going to be the Joker were you not in outrage? I was and look how it turned out, also villian I am hoping for is The Riddler in the 3rd movie.

I get what you're saying but I see it more as people don't necessarily think Spiderman 3 was atrocious (I certainly don't), it just wasn't as good as 1 or 2 (kind of like a Godfather II/Godfather III situation). Also, I think the suggestion that Nolan move on to a new project isn't a bad one. He did Prestige in between BB and TDK and it was a fantastic movie and gave him some well needed time off from the Batman franchise.

You are correct, the studios gave Raimi more control, basically ultimate freedom, but still injected their own say into the franchise and pushed for 3 villians. Since they're paying the big bucks, Raimi can't just say no; he's quoted numerous times in interviews saying spidey3 didn't turn out quite the way he had wanted it to. Sure he and his brother wrote the script, but the studios had their input as well. I'd sure love to read the initial drafts (if there are any)

It wasn't Raimi's fault... the studio executives FORCED HIM to put Venom into the film despite the director's protests.
