Berlin Film Fest To Spotlight 70mm Classics
The Berlin Film Festival -- the Berlinale -- is planning to screen some 22 restored movies that were originally shot on 65mm or 70mm negative film during its Retrospective sidebar in February. The films include Lawrence of Arabia, Ben Hur, Cleopatra, Patton, 2001: A Space Odyssey, West Side Story, The Sound of Music and Hello, Dolly! Several 70mm films produced in what was then the Soviet Union will also be screened, including the seven-hour epic War and Peace by director Sergei Bondarchuk. The prints will be screened at the Kino International, one of the few theaters in the world still equipped with 70mm projectors. "It will be a feast for the eyes," Berlinale director Dieter Kosslick said in a statement. "I'm delighted we'll be able to provide Berlinale audiences with such a spectacular cinema event." http://www.berlinale.de/en/das_festi...ive/index.html |

The only problem is that those movies will probably be presented in German

sorry, here's what I'm talking about (from in70mm.com):
“The History of Wide-Gauge Film” The book for the Retrospective - with an essay (“The History of Wide-Gauge Film”) and a glossary by Gert Koshofer – will be published in a bilingual edition (German/English) by Bertz + Fischer, a Berlin publishing house. It gives a complete survey of the 70mm productions made in the USA, Europe and the Soviet Union and presents contemporary reviews and extensive filmographic information on the films screening in the Retrospective. Once again, the Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum für Film und Fernsehen is responsible for both the Retrospective and the publication. |

Hopefully all of those films will be mastered with the same precision and care as Baraka.

'West Side Story' will be on HDNet Movies in December. I saw snippets earlier in the year, and it looked simply gorgeous. A new 70mm print was recently screened at the Castro in San Francisco, I sent an email requesting the AFI Silver try and present the movie as such. The AFI Silver did present 'War and Peace' in 70mm I of course was not in town - damn!
Fox did a 4K scan digital projection demo test of a 70mm print of 'The Sound of Music'. They also seemed to miss the ball completely and not release 'Hello Dolly' on bluray at the same time as 'Wall-E'. The 70mm print of 'Hello Dolly' I saw at the Silver though was eye-popping/jawdropping. Come on Fox/MGM/Warner's release these 70mm features on bluray... (ahem, 'Mutiny on the Bounty', 'Grand Prix and others ![]() |
