Default digital sound from blu-ray player?

I recently bought a Samsung 46 inch LCD (LN46A650). It comes with the blu-ray plater (BD-P1500). I have an old amp which has an optical input for 5.1, but it doesn't have an HDMI input.

When I link the blu-ray player and LCD with the HDMI cable, can I run an optical cable from the player to the amp? Or does the player detect an HDMI cable and disable the optical output?

Thanks very much!
