I was thinking about getting a projector, and was looking at being able to paint the wall for a couple hundred dollars versus buying a screen. Has anybody done this yet? If so, was it worth it, or did it look horrid?

I haven't done it personally, but I know there are multiple people experimenting with multiple formulas of paint at AVS.....
I hear a lot depends on your painting ability too ![]() One thing, that sounded odd to me, but I actually saw it at my local Home-Depot, and thought "wow, that'd be easy" is the "Wilsonart" laminate.... you just order the size you need, hang it, and put a border around it..... piece of cake... $40-$50 or so.... I made my screen out of Black-out-cloth, and it worked out great. Also, a painted screen is only as good as the wall it's painted on. |

I just finished my screen last night. I took "Black Out Cloth" and stretched it on a 1x4 wood frame (got the BOC at Jo Ann Fabrics). I then painted it with 2 coats of KILZ-2 primer and then applied 2 coats of Black Widow screen paint (formula is on AVS forums). I am very impressed with the image as is my wife. Total screen cost was about $70.

I went the do-able mdf board route and i love it. I spent more on the velvet for the frame than I did on the screen.

If you're really on a budget, a buddy of mine bought a roll of white photographer's background paper and some 2" wide poplar moulding (painted flat black) and built a 100" screen that actually looks pretty good! The whole thing was $50 and he has enough paper left from the roll to replace it should it get ripped, yellow over time, etc. |
