the first season of 'Chuck' was shot in 16mm so this is not a surprise.

Yes... film stock has a huge effect on graininess. Nowadays most films are shot on digital or 32mm film.

Technically all film can be rescanned at a higher resolution, but the smaller the film the less actual detail, and more grain, is contained there. All film is made of "grains", on smaller film these seem relatively bigger.

Old consumer video cameras often used 8mm to save money, but the quality is relatively terrible. 16mm is typically used for lower-budget feature films or TV shows, for example, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It looks decent, but still contains only half the detail of 32mm. IMAX films, and some others from the days of early Panavision, are on 70mm, which is most detailed (and least grainy) of all. Any of them can be put on Blu-Ray, but 32 and 70mm films will usually look best, unless a 32mm or 70mm film has been poorly stored (low budget films like the original 1974 Black Christmas, which was stored poorly enough it is comperable to good 16mm on Blu-Ray).

It seems from the other poster's comment that later seasons were shot on 32mm, so those should look better.

Haven't you ever seen "Chuck" on your local NBC affiliate in HD before?

"Chuck" is currently in it's 2nd season on NBC, and while it may have switched film stock, I don't really see much of a difference between the 2nd season and first season. It's just not that impressive of a show... visually, but I still consider the PQ of the Blu-ray to be superior to the DVD.

lol. Film stock has grain. The problem arises when a studios try to remove it.

It IS 35 XD

I kept debating that in my head... "Is it 32 or 35 dangit?"

I typed in 35 and then said, no... 32!

Anyway, I never said digital looked better...

I know, but when ever I hear digital and film in the same post I just have to point out that film is better. Sorry will you forgive me? It won't happen again, promise. Please don't be mad.

It has always looked grainy during it's regular broadcast so I'm not surprised that the Blu-Ray would look the same.
