Default Need For Speed: Undercover - IGN.com Review 4.0/10.0 - Framerate Issues

It's been released today.
I just got a copy and I'm installing game data right now.

I'll keep you guys updated on how it is.

UPDATE 1: Love the intro, it takes you right into the game from the intro.

UPDATE 2: I'm not liking the way you choose your races, you just easily press the Down on the D-Pad. (Hopefully for now). As well, the map is HUGE. I also see an option for 'job' on the map, as well, upgrades can be made. So we'll see how this unfolds.

UPDATE 3: I finally get to choose my car. I AM an undercover cop. I am taking orders from inspector Maggie Q

UPDATE 4: Just played online, I could only choose Circuit, Sprint, & Cops and Robbers. Now, I don't know if you have to unlock other modes in Career mode to use online, but I did not see any Drift mode or checkpoint. Hopefully, I do see some drifting in Career mode.

UPDATE 5: Framerate issues, whenever a car passes me, I notice framerate drops, it does get a tad annoying.

UPDATE 6: The map is amazingly huge, but it's extremely pointless. Sure, there is 'free roam', but you do not get anything out of it, all you do, is just drive. Biggest downfall.

UPDATE 7: Game is repetitive. I don't recommend.

Graphically, it's very nice, the HUD is laid out neatly (Minus the fact that the mini map is not helpful!), the environment is gorgeous, destructible too. (Of course). The audio, fantastic, cars have never sounded so great. You can hear the differences between a Toyota Supra and a Ford GT. Although I dislike the music at times, It is unfortunate that we cannot play our own music in game.

The Playstation Store! If you guys head over to the Add-on section for this game, you'll see a TON of add-ons! Don't get fooled! You can unlock all those in career mode! I guess they just sell them for people who do not want to finish career mode :S

IGN review :

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/931/931109p1.html

What piss me the most :

Quote:
While the Xbox 360 version runs at a mostly steady framerate, though certainly not a blistering one, the PlayStation 3 version can become downright unplayable at times
Summary :

Quote:
6.0 Presentation
The cutscenes don't work as well as intended, it's way too easy and the open world setup is almost completely pointless.
3.5 Graphics
The cars don't look all that great, the city is lifeless and the framerate can be terrible at times.
8.0 Sound
The engine effects are great, though they could be mixed better. The soundtrack is decent, though it isn't used too often.
4.0 Gameplay
Why is this game set in an open world? You can't drive to events or find anything, so what's the point? It's way too easy, and becomes almost undrivable at times because it chugs so much.
6.0 Lasting Appeal
The online stuff works, but it's very basic and will get old after a while. There's a decent number of events, but it just isn't any fun.
4.0
Poor OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

I do agree with some of them.

Presentation: Yes, the open world is pointless, I do enjoy cruising to my races, not using the D-Pad.

Graphics: They arn't horrible, they DON'T deserve a 3.5. I believe that the framerates killed this part of the review.

Sound: I agree. I dislike soundtrack. In game music FTW!

Gameplay: Again, open world is pointless, but none-the-less, it's got the NFS racing feel, and it's awesome.

Lasting Appeal: Online can be fun, if EA servers weren't so bad. As for cops and robbers, you always need a Tier 1 car. The cop car is always extremely fast.

Hmm, tough call - I'm trying to decide between NFS or Midnight Club. MC had a better review, but I've always liked the NFS cop chases.

Its really disappointing when EA develop games specifically for the less superior console and then port it over to the PS3.

I don't think that its reviewer bias in this case, but EA dropping the ball.

I found that when the cops were chasing me for 5 minutes, the communication between them were excellent. I was waiting for a helicopter or some spike strips, but I got nothing.

It feels like the series has been going down hill since most wanted (carbon was fun though) . I thought this one was gonna be good again, but apparently not. Maybe they spent all their budget on the actors and didnt leave enough for the dev team to make a decent game.

That's exactly what I thought too.
They have Maggie Q plus all these real live actors.
I couldn't careless for all these famous people, if I did, I would have a bought a movie!

I've bought every NFS game on day 1 going back to the original underground (on the Gamecube of all things), but this one I've just been wary about from the start. After looking at the above review (which I know is only 1 persons opinion) plus the fact I already own Midnight Club LA, I think I'll be leaving this one alone and save my pennies for something else.

My last NFS was Hot Pursuit 2, which I absolutely loved and still play once in awhile. I just never got into the 'open world' in the newer NFS and in the newest Burnout. That, and I guess I never felt a racing game needed a plot.

As for the 'original' I have the PS1 game Need For Speed. Somewhere I think I still have Test Drive that I used to run on my 286 PC.

Now I feel like outrunning that stupid helecoptor in a McLaren before it drops barrels on me....

any updates? I'm still debating this purchase. Anybody else have an opinion on it? Would I be better off buying Midnight Club?

I am currently playing Midnight Club and would recommend it. The races are difficult in MCLA and it is quite challenging. I will be getting NFS Undercover since I got a connection and will get it for $25. I play MCLA with a Logitech DFGT and it is alot of fun with a wheel. Anyone play NFS Undercover with a wheel yet?
