Default mistake or not i just got the samsung bpd 1000-how do i get firmware??

just got the player today-this is my first venture into hi-def dvd.ever since i got hi-def cable from my company dvds looked awful.so here i am.

i keep reading about firmware and i see it for this player on samsungs website and this maybe a stupid question but if i downlaod it to my pc how do i get the firmware from my pc to the player??

i havent watched a blu-ray movie yet but i already dont like the audio situation-it only has analog 5.1-what about new movies in 6.1 or 7.1-my reciever is set up for 7.1 if the soundtrack has it-i have to switch to bitstream audio

how is the 5.1 analog??does it sound superior to dolby digital/dts-and is it as good as dolby digital plus on hd-dvd??

lastly i just started watching gladiator-i guess the player automaticaaly upconverts because it says 1080i which my tv is and i have the hdmi cable in-but im not overly impressed so far with the upconvert-hi def tv looks better and it only looks a little better than my old jvc standard player-i have 30days to return-we will see

You can burn the firmware to a CD-ROM if you want to upgrade the firmware. You then stick the CD-ROM in the player. Further directions are on Samsung’s website.
When 7.1 movies come out your player will down convert them to 5.1. In the future new BLU-RAY players might have 7.1 outputs, also new BLU-RAY players will have HDMI 1.3 to pass some of the advanced audio formats to some of the new receivers.
Your Samsung player 5.1 audio output jacks are used only for BLU-RAY discs. The player will decode the higher bit rate Dolby Digital and DTS sound tracks and it sounds better then DVD. If your receiver can handle the higher bit rate you can also select bit stream and let the receiver decode the audio for you using the digital connection.
There is not much difference between 480I and up converting it to 1080I. I would recommend purchasing one of the new BLU-RAY movies that uses a 50GB disc with MPEG-4/AVC to see how good 1080P looks. The HDTV picture quality of BLU-RAY is better quality then CABLE, satellite, or broadcast.

I don't own a Samsung, but some partial answers:

Well of course Hi def Tv looks better than upconverted DVD (HDTV is up to 6x better). That's what we have Blu-rays for. I think you burn a CD-R from the firmware download and put the disc in the player to upgrade it. (If your player doesn' have the latest firware). Wait till some Samsung owner comes and explains it better than me in the thread. But you can start playing Blu-rays before the firmware.

Watch a Blu-ray now!

For the audio. Uncompressed LPCM is better that compressed dolby digital and dts
Does your receiver have multichannel analog inputs? If it does you conect the Samsung 6 channel outputs into your receivers 6 channel analog inputs and you listen to LPCM tracks with it for example.

Since the Sammy has only 6 channel (5.1) analog outputs, yes for 7 channel DTS 6.1 ES for example you would go through the optical, to get the extra channel

Not many BDs have more that 5.1/6.1 yet. If you use the analog outs I think those extra channels are downmixed into the 5.1's two surrounds?

etc

once you download the firmware update to your PC, you have to burn it on to a blank cd and put it in the player.... it what i heard from my uncle, or you can have samsung send you a disc...

as far as the audio question i can't answer, but the upconvert on the samsung bpd 1000 Upconverts DVDs to near HD: It also upconverts all your DVD signals to near high-definition via 720p/1080i and 1080p, so the pictures are detailed and lifelike, with studio-quality sound.

Notice the word NEAR HD ..... if you want a better standalone BD player the panasonic & pioneer is a good choice.... but the price is kinda high...
Good luck

you download the file but it will be a zip file. decompress it. within the decompressed folder, there will be an iso image. burn this to a cd but not as a data file. you must burn the image itself. then, insert it into the samsung. the samsung will then up the iso image which takes approx 15 mins. read the instructions in the enclosed pdf for more info.

thanks everyone -i will be renting and purchasing some blu ray movies-and after watching gladiator for awhile maybe the player needed to warm up since it was my first time using it because the upconversion started to look more like hd than not and pretty great for a standard dvd.this is without the firmware update so im psyched to see blu-ray.
