Blu-ray will be available on gaming consoles for several reasons. 1. They want it! Few games exist on DVD for the pc, let alone X-box. But people want to use their X-box to watch dvd's. Why? I heard that the processor power make for a better picture on the screen. Thus virtually eliminating compression artifacts. DVD players are built for decompressing of standard audio/video codecs. They don't have the power of X-box, or even PS2.
2. They must be planning on bigger games with BIGGER graphics that play on HD TV's. X-Box supports a resolution of 800x600. That was hot stuff a few years BEFORE PS2 or X-box were even released. They need to move to the next generation and match the 1080 WIDESCREEN capabilities of modern tv's. Writing a video game for a 1080x1600 widescreen is a whole new ball of wax. Graphic templates must be of a higher quality and resolution. You must display info for a 16:9 screen, and not 4:3. This takes much more CPU and memory power. Can you say, "Halo 3"? Even so, X-BOX 2 and PS3 will probably still have games released on DVD only. CD will be too small, and blu-ray is overkill. Blu-ray is there to play movies....not so much games. These things are craved by High School and College students who will not have the budget, or room, for BOTH a gaming system and blu-ray player. First person shooters are some of the most popular games. It is HIGH TIME we start seeing them in widescreen. |

1) Most Games on PS2 and Xbox are on DVD.... Xbox games are on DVD since day one. PC games also come on DVD. I highly think that X2 will either use a HD-DVD format but it will be properitery. I think that only PS3 will have Blu-ray and maybe N5. 2)Bigger and more immersive games are what the business is about ..... PS3 games will be about 4- 5 times bigger than PS2's.... Imagine a grandtheft Auto on PS3  3) Initaily yes but those games will not be HD at 1080i or p since BD is made for HDTV so I think that it will not feel the same and DVD's will get phased out quicker. |

Im working on a game right now for Playstation dev that is 1080i MINIMUM. We are playing in releasing it on an 8cm blu ray, and it will have 23.3 gigs of data on it. MOST of that data is being used for better graphics, with gameplay levels being about the same size. You have to remember that the game system is still limited by the amount of memory it has on board, and you can count on not very much being there, so more system can be sold at a cheaper price.
I just wish they would allow you to add your own memory. You could make games that include a memory upgrade. My guess is that in order to use a full Blu Ray disc for game, it will need a minimum of 1 gig of DDR ram. This will have to be ran on a VERY high bus speed. Something better then MIPS programming needs to be used to push more data through, faster. |

1 GB of DDRAM = 128MB of XDRAM
You have to remember the "Yellowstone" RAM going into the PS3 has 8 times the bandwidth of your average Joe DDR. Granted, 128MB of RAM with high bandwidth will choke IF you try to jam more then 128MB, but then, I don't think you'll need to stream something THAT big through the XDRAM. With that said, I'm quite confident that PS3 would be able to utilize fully what the Blu-Ray has to offer. |

I dont believe that at all.
I just spent all weekend making an application for the ps2. The 32 megs of ram on that ps2 is flat out stupid. You cant do anything with it. Think about loading debug tools into the ps2 for dev. You cant, because it only has 32 megs of ram. So you cant watch the iop, or run your own program in order to watch it, because ALL of the ram is used in each game. Sony even understands this problem, and they make Dev PS2s called "TOOLS" that have 128 megs of ram, and other upgrades. What I am trying to push to sony, is to allow upgrades to the PS3. Imagine making a game on Blu-Ray, that has 200 GB of data. You can bundle the game, with a 1 gig ram upgrade. That would open up a whole door for marketing, and devolopment. Either way its needed to help programmers make games, and also to allow customers to have better gameplay. |

I think it would be useful if you could upgrade your ram, but only if games were still compatible whatever amount you had. Company's will not write for 1 GB of ram if only 10% of owners have that amount. If it were possible for a game to automatically detect the amount of ram in the console, and then optimise the game for that amount of ram, this would be the optimum situation. Perhaps if you have 1GB, you could specify a 1920 by 1080p60 hi-def output, compared to standard 800 by 600 for just 256MB. Would this work? :?:
