Default If Many of us DON'T watch or need EXTRAS.....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

on Blu-ray discs, why do they include so many little

nothings that many of us watch once and forget about.

Space on these discs is so precious, why not just give us

stunning PQ and superlative wide band, crystal clear sound

Maybe even 24/96 uncompressed sound . . .is this do-able?

And Just Leave Out the Extras . . . .

DISCUSS . . . . . .

I see more movies using a 2nd disc to put the special features on. I agree that PQ and AQ should be top priority before any features are added. I sometimes watch the special features, very rarely though.

I love extras if anything I want more. I feel cheated if I get a movie and there are very little to no extras. It makes owning the movie that much more enjoyable for me, and commentaries are a must. I listen to the commentaries quite often and love it.

Personally speaking, I rarely watch the extras and could care less if they're included or not. A lot of them aren't even in HD, which really annoys me anyway.

I don't care either way really. Out of 500+ blu-rays I've watched extras on maybe 7-8 of them...?

Honestly, this is a non-issue. If you want to complain about something, they should really start making movies in both "full screen" and "wide screen". I know people would rather have a full screen without black bars.

Sigh...another one of these threads...

Space isn't that precious on a 50GB disc...multiple language tracks on a disc eat into available space much more than most extras. Besides, it's easy enough to toss the extras onto a second 25GB disc.

And before it's suggested, NO, I absolutely do not want them to use BD-Live to let those who want them download the extras. The big problem with that is that then you'll have extras that vanish over time as the studios pull them from the download site. Case in point, Sony's Starship Troopers 3. I rented it from Blockbuster and went to the (terrible) BD-Live portal to discover Part 3 of some Comic-Con interview doc with the cast. Parts 1 & 2 were already gone (according to the site Part 3 should have been as well). What a load a crap considering Part 3 was only a couple of minutes long, the space that Parts 1 & 2 would have occupied on Sony's servers must have been pretty minimal.

I like having extras on the disc (or a second disc). If a disc comes with no extras, I have a hard time justifying the purchase especially if I know there is a DVD version that was loaded with extras. This is especially true with Fox/MGM movies that they are still trying to push at $35 and zero extras. Funny thing is, I don't really watch most extras, mostly deleted scenes type stuff, trivia tracks, and perhaps other short films that may be included (like the Pixar shorts on Wall-E).

I have the same problem with Warner's continued lack of lossless audio. I don't want to buy any of their movies that don't include lossless soundtracks. But the thing is, I can't make use of lossless soundtracks anyway since I have a PS3 and my receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs. All I can use is DD and DTS and even there it's just 5.1 not even 6.1 capable.

If you don't like extras, that's fine. Cover up the listing on the back of the case with some masking tape. And when the disc loads, block the extras listings with your hand until you can get the movie playing. Just don't lower the overall value of Blu-Ray purchases by demanding they be removed.

Extras are great. I refuse to upgrade to Blu-Ray if all of the Extras from the DVD edition arn't ported over as well. I'm not going to support a shoddy release of a film on Blu-Ray. I've already passed on a couple for that very reason. In fact, Bill Hunt had a great lil rant about this very subject the other day.

Quote:
Okay, I really didn't expect to get on a rant today, but circumstances have determined otherwise...

Specifically, MGM has officially announced the Blu-ray Disc release of Ronin on 2/24 (SRP $34.99 - we posted the cover art yesterday), thus sending a round of cheers through The Bits' offices. That's the good news. The bad news is that the disc includes NOTHING in the way of special features... not even the previous DVD CE material. And that quickly turned the cheers around here into groans. Seriously, a movie only Blu-ray for $34.99? That's just unacceptable. For $24.99, maybe. But for $34.99, MGM damn well ought to at least port over the previous DVD extras. Movie-only releases for FULL price just doesn't cut it.

While we're talking about Blu-ray peeves (following my rant from last week about Sony's movie-only La Femme Nikita and The Messenger), here's a couple other things that need to change: Warner needs to stop using excessive DNR on their titles, and start making lossless audio MANDATORY ON EVERY RELEASE. This has been an ongoing problem - one that we thought Warner had agreed to address earlier this year. But too many titles are still slipping through the cracks with lackluster specs. And on their catalog Blu-rays, Universal needs to stop taking perfectly good featurettes and documentaries and cutting them up for use as U-Control Picture-in-Picture material.

Look guys (and I'm talking to you studio folks now, so LISTEN UP), here's the thing: Do you REALLY want to impress consumers with your Blu-ray titles? Then here's how you do it: You focus on ENTHUSIASTS. You impress the enthusiasts with top-notch A/V quality and decent extras at a fair price. If you can please them, you'll please almost everyone else too. Blu-ray is ABOUT offering the best video and audio quality possible, so that should be a given. As far as extras, almost no one gives a s--t about BD-Live and U-Control if you can't be bothered at least to include the previous DVD bonus material! Why? Because you're asking movie fans to UPGRADE to the Blu-ray, when many of them probably already own the DVD special edition. Upgraded picture and sound, with downgraded extras and a higher price - that's a net NEGATIVE! Do you get it?! This stuff isn't rocket science, guys. If, after including all the previous DVD content, you really want to add on some advanced interactive stuff too, then fine. But Blu-ray is still being driven by enthusiasts, and enthusiasts - hell, I would think ALL Blu-ray consumers - demand top quality and VALUE for their money. So shape up, studios!

Depends on the movie, some movies I go and watch every single special feature, some movies I have never even put in disc two, I rarely watch Commentary, the only commentary I usually watch are really Simpsons and Futurama, I really like the writers and like to hear what they have to say, plus there funny. I plan on watching the cometary on Clone Wars and Wall-E though, just haven't had the time lately.

Because many does not equal all.
The extras are what usually make the decision for me between "buy" or "rent".
Also obviously you have decided to ignore the threads constantly being angry at companies not porting over extras from dvds or not giving more extras.

Indeed. Even if people don't typically watch the extras... they're still a selling point.

Why do people think they hype "So-Many Hours of Extras" and stuff.

Consumers want more from their money. Even if for some, it's stuff that they'll never watch.

It's the principal of the thing. Just like how downloads will never replace hard media.
