Default Buying a new surround sound

I am going to be spending around 1000 dollars for a new surround system, and I really don't know where to start. I want the absolute best sound quality for the money. Additionally, I'll have to get mountable front speakers as I have a baby that's about to learn to walk. I don't want him poking at the mid-ranges. If I have to go a few hundred over, that would be do-able, but I really would like to keep it right at 1000 dollars. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Go audition some speakers and consider the Pioneer 1018, Yammy 663, Sony 920 and Onkyo 606 for a receiver.

I had a similar issue as you with a child, but I got my Sony floorstanding speakers and just keep the screens on and trust me, the kids learn quickly not to touch them. It really isn't something you need to be too concerned about. My 18 month old is a terror and she knows not to touch the TV, receiver, speakers or blu-ray. Kids are TRAINABLE!

For mountable speakers I would say perhaps if you can mount the Polk monitor 40's and then put 30's as surrounds and a CS2 for a center with a good quality sub, you would be good and stay around $1000. But I would suggest just buying some Monitor 50's or 60's for fronts.

My sonys are really nice too, they match really closely to the monitor series. and they are a little less expensive.

It's 200 more than the budget, but I'm guessing if you went to a dealer you could get that system for 1k. All of the speakers are mountable, or you can get stands for them. It fits the need and should sound good, but as far as the sound goes that's for you to decide if you like. I know I like their Mythos Gem surround speakers.

Thanks for the responses.

callas01: I'm in the process of training my second kid now. We just put in a new TV stand that's shelves are black glass, so that's been fun. I'll definitely look at the speakers/receivers you've suggested.

Intamin: Have you personally heard them, and do they support lossless audio?

Also, callas01, would the CS2 work well with the Polk Monitor 60s? I really like what I've read about those so looks like those will be my fronts.

Yeah, the CS2 would work well with the 60's. Also those recievers I suggested, they are all really similar, I thought the Pioneer stood out the best, but I ended up buying the Sony 920. The Sony is an excellent player and is getting great reviews. But really take the time to listen to everything before you buy it. Oh, and shop online, should save you some $$.

Yeah, I have two also, 4 and 18 mos. And people said it gets easier with 2... LIARS! LOL

Would you recommend any cheap rear channel speakers, or should I stick with Polk for the rears also?

Bump for the above question, and what's a good sub that's under 200?
