Default Christmas Vacation PQ?

Hey out there. I just got to watching this Bluray and i was a little dissapointed with the PQ quality. (i wasnt thrilled with only 2.0 DD either but whatever for now) Has anyone else noticed the PQ being fairly poor? Just curious to be sure im not the only one. I think it looks close to DVD quality... unless im losing my vision lol.

I was thrilled with the PQ! It's not the BEST PQ I've seen on Blu-ray by any means, but it looks great compared to my old DVD copy.

I personally didn't see even a decent difference with the upconverted DVD, colors aren't even that good compared to the DVD.

Christmas Vacation on BD is the worst transfer I've ever seen. I wish Warner would recall them and give it the quality transfer it deserves.

The opening animated sequence is full of grain and the whites are a grayish color. Later on the picture quality is a little better but not much. It has a "soft" look (just like the dvd) and the sharpness of close-ups is missing.

The soundtrack is OK since there is little improvement that a complete 5.1 mix can help with. The only scene in the movie that would benefit from the 5.1 mix is when santa and his reindeer are launched by the explosion from the sewer gas.

Hopefully enough people complain to Warner and they re-issue a new release with a all new transfer. Like was done with the Fifth Element.

Ok, im glad it wasnt anything on my side, which i figured it wasnt. yes, i noticed from the very get go with the cartoon in the beginning that it was not a very good transfer. If they were to re-issue a new release, would they replace this blu that people bought already?

Grain doesn't equal bad. It's been a year since I saw it, so I can't comment on the whites being "a grayish color", but that might actually be an issue. Still, other than a restoration done by WB, I doubt that can be fixed by a new encode.

As for the "soft" look, since the DVD has the same issue, it's possible that's how the film was shot, which means nothing can be done about.

I'm not quite sure what you're referring to regarding the "sharpness", but if the DVD has them as well, it's again possible that the film was shot without sharp close-ups.

Christmas Vacation & Christmas Story were a 1% PQ upgrade from DVD.
I will give props to Warner for removing the few dust particles that are present on the DVD but not the BR version.

I love the movie and still haven't upgraded to the Blu-ray but I have a feeling this is a title that WB didn't put much effort into. It seems like WB could do a little better on some of their titles.

There really is no nice way of saying that the BD of this movie is awful looking compared to other Blu-rays. Warner seems to have pulled out whatever old HD master they had laying around and then transferred it at very poor specifications. It still looks better than the dvd but that is not saying much with six times the resolution available on Blu-ray.
