K- I'm pretty sure I'm setting this up right, I just need a little reassurance...
I'm setting up my dad's new panny 55 and hooking it up via 5.1 analog to his older Denon 2805 that neither plays DTS MA or TrueHD, or HDMI I have the player decoding it as PCM on the audio settings, and not bitstream. Is this correct. If I selected bitstream, what would be the difference? Thanks!! |

Hi there,
Go into the user menu and set the player in the following fashion. Press the setup button on the remote control. select sound in the menu, then proceed to Digital Audio Ouput. Set priority setting to user, and select the following. Dolby Digital/Dolby Digital+/Dolby TrueHD set to PCM. DTS/DTS-HD PCM. MPEG Audio PCM. BD-Video secondary audio Off Once you have to set the player to PCM connect the BDP 55 via the players Audio out section on the rear of the player to the amplifiers 5.1 audio connection. The processing will done by the player, all you have to do is switch amp to multi channel and a way you go. Please make sure the HDMI audio setting is off if your not using the speakers on the television. I hope this will be of help to you, please do let me know if this works out for you ok. Regards, Starfleet officer. |

Sorry, Starfleet Officer. But, most of that is wrong. Those settings will work. But, they are not necessary and they undermine other features of the BD55.
The digital audio output settings have nothing to do with the analog outputs. There's next to nothing involved in setting up analog. Just run the cables and pop in the disc. The player will decode any track you play and convert it to analog. I set my digital outputs to bitstream, not PCM, because I use a coax connection for DVDs. I get lossless over analog for BD playback and bitstream over coax for DVD. Also, you can set secondary audio on and leave it that way. You'll get lossless audio regardless of the secondary audio setting. If there's secondary audio present, the player mixes it in. But, the main track will always be lossless (with a couple of minor caveats). Finally, you don't need to turn off HDMI Audio. The HDMI handshake with a TV may cause a two channel downmix of the digital outputs. But, analog processing is not affected. The ability to use the analog and digital outputs simultaneously and independently is one of the things that makes this a better player than the S550, in my opinion. So is the fact that you can set secondary audio on and leave it. With the S550, secondary audio kills lossless, forcing the user to switch it on and off between movies and commentaries. Thanks, Style. But, I'm not sure what you mean by that. Bitstream and PCM are both digital and do not affect analog processing on the BD55. I use bitstream for a second, digital connection to my receiver which I use for DVD playback. Bitstreaming over coax allows me to use my AVR's DACs and its better tools for bass management and EQ.

![]() Colglizity, connect the 5.1 cables from the player to the receiver, put in disc, and enjoy. The bitstreaming and pcm selection in the main menu is for digital audio outputs only, i.e. coaxial, optical, or hdmi cables. |

You will likely need to boost the subwoofer by 10-15db in your receiver since LFE is recorded lower than its proper playback level. That will get the bass sounding right. |

hallo BIslander,
with the receiver without HDMI you go to bypas all with analog cable Right? well, with bitstream-choice you go have all the best / possiblity from your bmp55. in PCM modus the bmp55 (with the denon 2805 and the analog by-passing) you go "loss" the best in audio. we will say the same but with 2 different explication...
