Question volume control scale
Hello,
I have a Yamaha receiver and the volume ranges from (if I remember correctly) -50dB to +50dB. Now, I could understand it if 0dB was zero volume, but -dB's? What is the reference point for 0dB? I'm guessing that maybe it's the original amplitude of the source material or is it arbitrary? I'm curious as I find that most of my listening is done at -10 to -15.

On a related note, the amp puts out 100 watts per channel. Would this power level be output only at the highest volume setting (+50)?
