Graham Slee "Gram Amp 2 SE phono pre":

Congrats!

Now make sure you go out and buy a few 180-gram or 200-gram releases to really enjoy your new set-up!

Congrats! Always nice to see more vinyl spinners here. I second John's comment about treating yourself to some audiophile vinyl.

So far I have on the way:

The Black Keys - Magic Potion - 180g
The Black Keys - Attack and Release - 180g
A Perfect Circle - Mer De Noms - 180g
Metallica - Ride The Lightning 180g
Nirvana - MTV Unplugged in New York
Dragonforce Ultra Beatdown

Looking for some other stuff like Live, Tragically Hip etc atm, some acoustic guitar albums with no vocals and nothing too weird in it would be nice too.

I still enjoy my vinyl from time to time, though with a modest component system. Congrats on yours!

I mostly posted because of my avatar.

I feel rather pathetic by comparison... thats about the amount i spent on my whole 2 channel setup... but dang thats a sexy turntable... i would kill to have the money/time/collection to do that kind of setup... thats about the amount i have budgeted for a tube power amp lol

I always thought Live's best album was the first one, Metal Jewellery.
It's definitely the most acoustic sounding album and as an album is totally devoid of pretension and full of passion.

Coldplay's "Parachutes" is available on 180g for around $12
Death Cab For Cutie's "Plans" is available on a double-gatefold 180g issue, around $26
Pearl Jam's "Ten" is on vinyl for $10 on Amazon, new
Plenty of 180g Beatles re-issues as well
I saw Kill 'Em All at HMV on 180g last week. I'd like to listen to "Seek and Destroy" and "The Four Horsemen" on your new system, two of my favourite Metallica tracks.

After reading many reviews I think I have decided on getting the Goldring GR1.2 from a record store in Hamilton, ON for $359 Canadian. It normally retails here for $499 and most places I check in the US are US$429. It comes with a Rega 250 tonearm and a Goldring Elektra cartridge.

I'll be picking it up on Jan 15th with my next quarterly bonus. Can't wait!

Wow! Very nice set up! Nice to see vinyl making a come back. I kind of miss the "old" vinyl format. I still have some Original Master Recordings from Mobil Fidelity. Often think about getting another turntable. There's something about placing the tonearm down on that black disc and sitting back and oohing and aahing to that. That set up will sound awesome and will no doubt bring you many hours of listening enjoyment. And now with the 180 gram & 200 gram discs available you will have some tough choices to make. Let us know your impressions when you set it all up!

If I am reading the manual for my 805 correctly it seems as though a phono pre amp is not required:

Phono Overload: 70 mV (MM, 1 kHz, 0.5%)

http://www.onkyo.ca/model.cfm?m=TX-S...s=Receiver&p=s

Am I wasting my money on a phono pre or can I still use it?

you should still be able to use the phono pre... and it's likely somewhat better than the integrated one in the onkyo

It sounds like your Onkyo 805 has a phono pre amp for moving magnet cartridges. Your Ortofon 2m cartridge that you have ordered is a moving magnet cartridge. So, it appears that you would be set without the Graham Slee Phono Pre amp. The Graham may perform better than the Onkyo as a Phono Preamp. However, the Graham will also work as a Phono Preamp for high output moving coil cartridges if you change to one in the future.

If you do use the Graham though, you would not connect it through the Phono inputs for the Onkyo 805. You would need to connect the Graham through another input like an Auxiliary input.

The phono preamp isn't strictly necessary, but it's likely to be MUCH better than the one in your receiver, which was probably thrown in without much thought to sound quality. So no, your phono preamp is NOT a waste of money!

Sooo first of my vinyl arrived today.

Only problem is the retards at Canada Post decided since I wasn't home to accept the package they would leave it in the back yard for me.

With the dog...

So I came home to bits of Dragonforce, Nirvana and packing material all over the back yard.

At least it wasn't the more expensive ones I guess

Trying to see if I can get them to pay up, I left a bag of bits and a phone number with the supervisor on staff.
