Default Porn Could Be the Key to Next-Generation DVD War

Here is an April 6 article on how porn is going to win the format war. I think this porn issue and twisting facts around is coming from both the porn industry and people that are pro HD-DVD. There are some people that will decide to not purchase porn on moral grounds. Regardless to where one stands morally on the porn issue the porn industry can have an effect on the format war. There are video rental stores that 25%-30% of the store incomes come from renting porn on DVD. So I would say perhaps if porn was exclusive in one format that maybe 30% of people would one day buy into the format that had porn.
Sony has the right to make their own corporate decisions to not be involved in porn. If the porn industry would wait a few months there will be more third party BLU-RAY replicators that will be willing to press their movie titles on BLU-RAY.

The following quote from the article I totally disagree with. They are claiming that immediately a few million people are going to purchase HD-DVD players if porn is on HD-DVD format exclusively. Perhaps as high as 30% of the population over a few years might choose HD-DVD instead of BLU-RAY if porn was exclusive but they are not going to sale millions of players in the next few months if a dozen HD-DVD porn discs were to come out. It would take some time to sale the players.

"If the porn industry wanted to break the logjam of HD-DVD and Blu-ray, it could," McQuivey said. "If they said 'We are going to go with HD-DVD' you would see a few million homes immediately go out and buy HD-DVD players. They have that power."

For people that want porn in HDTV most likely porn will be on both HD-DVD and BLU-RAY formats. If the HD-DVD camp was to secure exclusive porn studios then maybe 30% of the population that was going to purchase BLU-RAY might purchase HD-DVD instead. I still think Disney, Fox, and Sony Pictures being exclusive to BLU-RAY will be more important in deciding the format war.

We've seen this arguments on forums a million times, usually by HD-DVD zealots clinging to a hope and a prayer.

The insane amount of completely free porn anyone can get off the Internet, anytime they feel like it (or even by accident when they don't) really ices the whole thing.

I just don't think porn is much of a factor either way, really.

I agree with JTK. This isn't the 1980's. The internet is where people get their porn today, mostly for free. Porn will not decide the next generation HD format.

If porn is the key, we would all be watching 720p WMVHD DVD9 discs.

Porn didn't make that format a success and I can't see it making much difference in 1080p HD discs either. The times they have a-changed!

True.

Just not in this context.

It's a desperate attempt by two impotent partners .. misery loves company as they say.

hahaha, but I don't belive that Porn has the same pull it used to. Since you know, the last time this format war took place the internet hadn't become mainstream.

I don't know if anyone cares about buying porn in HD when you can get it free...

it's just not the powerhouse that the actual movies being released are...

I really don't care if porn is in SD or HD...

what's the point?

I think that everyone is somehow missing the point. If this is a format war then why would we want to give the enemy (HD DVD) any advantage? The purpose of the format war is to determine a single solution to replace SD DVD. Otherwise, we will continue to fight in a niche market and SD DVD will continue to be the standard.

If Blu-ray is making it difficult (or at least the perception is Blu-ray is making it difficult) to replicate porn movies and HD DVD is embracing the porn industry, then that is an advantage for HD DVD period.

Blu-ray should embrace the porn industry the way HD DVD has and help them build their own replication facilities if Sony refuses to work with them. The porn industry has tons of cash.

Also, the Blu-ray association should go after Paramount and Warner for not releasing Blu-ray titles with lossless audio tracks when they release the same titles in HD DVD with lossless audio tracks. Otherwise, people supporting both formats may prefer to buy the HD DVD version (I know I would).

If porn is an internet only thing, then please tell me why my local cable provider has about a dozen pay per view porn channels, including at least one and sometimes two High Def porn PPV always available (and they only have two High Def PPV!), plus massive numbers of on demand porn. Add to that numerous subscription services.

(Not that I have ever watched any of them!)

I wager large numbers of people must be consuming this stuff, and continuing to rent/buy DVDs of this ilk.

(Agreed it won't decide the format war... But Blu Ray should be content neutral)

No person is going to pay $50-$75 a disc to get dirty high-def porn.

I will admit I am probably going to buy the "debbie does dallas" remake on the principle of having to own at least one 1080P porn movie.

I will never buy it. 45 dollars can get you the real thing just be sure to spend a few extra couple bucks and get a condom first.

Porn films were great for tape because before that there was nothing but 16mm stag films or a XXX theatre. Nowadays porn is easily found on the internet or on DVD.

IMO, people touting the importance of porn to HD are not thinking through the issue or were not adults before porn on video.

It's not "internet only"...but why pay for high quality porn that will likely cost an arm and a leg...

does anyone really care about HD porn...other than big-time porn stars?

I think a lot of people are going to be very dissapointed in HD porn... You don't neccessarily want to see a lot of these porn stars in HD, they aren't going to look nearly as good.

The porn 'industry' thinks too much of itself. It sounds to me like they're some how trying to justify their reject existence to the public.

This is one case in which I believe that digital distribution trumps disc distribution.

Oh-I thought this thread was a joke...People aren't going to freakin' pay 35-50 bucks for a porn Blu-Ray disc when you can get it online for free (or a small fee). If Porn is the key to the next-gen war then get ready for fire and brimstone cause it won't be long until it starts raining frogs and stuff.

I can't believe they are thinking porn accounts for up to 30% of video store rentals/sales.

First of all, who rents movies from places other than Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, or NetFlix? Probably not people that would not be interested in HD at all. These businesses don't rent/sell porn (as far as my searches go), so where is all this porn coming from?
